Colts hit for six at Woodford
Sunday 19th April 2009
The season will be prolonged for the Colts as they were well & truly beaten by Woodford on Sunday in a competitive match that fell apart for the Colts midway through the second half when the home side scored five goals in ten minutes.
The home side started brightly and the Colts were surprisingly at sixes and sevens at the back for the early part of the match and after missing a few good chances Woodford deservedly took the lead when the Colts failed to clear a back post free kick. However this seemed to kick start the Colts and they finished the stronger team as the half closed with Johnny having a few half chances but on the balance of play the home side deserved the slender half time lead.
The second half continued as the first ended with the Colts in the ascendancy and after ten minutes Johnny broke clear of the defence and planted the ball into the corner of the net past the advancing keeper. The game was now very tight but halfway through the half the game shifted firmly in the favour of the home side. The Colts failed to clear a long punt from the keeper which landed in the Colts box and Woodford took advantage to go back in front and a minute later added a third. At 3-1 down Lewis was pushed up front to try and get back in the game but the move backfired as three further quick goals were added as the Colts failed to cope with Woodford’s effective long ball tactics. With the game now out of sight Johnny added a second to make the final score a thumping 6-2 victory for the home side.
It was a poor game for the Colts with too many playing below their normal levels and Woodford deservedly took the points to keep the championship race alive. The Colts now have a play off with Woodloes and perhaps also with Woodford if they win their last two games against Lillington & Crick Colts.

Colts go to Woodford for the biggest match in their history
Friday 17th April 2009
This Sunday the Colts visit promotion rivals Woodford United in a crucial match that will decide the season’s outcome for the Colts. A draw or victory will see the Colts crowned as champions and gain them promotion to Div 1; however a defeat will prolong the season with a two or perhaps even a three-way play off.
It’s certainly going to be a tense and tough match as both teams have so much riding on the result. Anything but a victory for the home side will see them finish in 3rd place as they will be unable to catch either the Colts or long-time leaders Woodloes for a top two place but a home victory on Sunday followed by further victories against Crick Colts & Lillington Rangers will see a three way tie on 46 points.
Both sides go into the match in good form but Woodford go into the match not only with home advantage but also with the knowledge that they can beat the Colts as they are the only team to defeat the Colts this season with a 3-2 victory at Leek Wootton back in November. This was certainly a game where the Colts didn’t play well and Woodford deserved their victory on the day. However the Colts will be motivated to reverse the result and thereby claim their very first league title.
This season both teams have had the better of results against the other teams in the division. Woodford drew at Lillington and have been beaten twice by Woodloes but other than that they have had a clean sweep of results. By comparison the Colts have a very similar record but crucially have just the one defeat with the 3-3 draw at Woodloes being the only other points that they have dropped. Over the years the Colts have had the better of results with four victories to one but all that will be forgotten on Sunday as the two sides lock horns in what will be a titanic game.

Six point weekend puts the Colts on the brink
Monday 6th April 2009
Two tough games but two solid defensive performances and five goals earned the Colts two victories and six points to put them on the brink of promotion and within sniffing distance of the championship. With one game left, albeit a very tough one, avoid defeat and the double benefit of promotion and the Div 2 title will be theirs. However the Colts are taking nothing for granted the away game at Woodford United in two weeks time will be the biggest challenge for the lads all season.
This weekend it was back to the Wardens on Friday evening for a tough game against Lillington Rangers who for the second time this season proved to be a tough nut to crack. The visitors came with a defensive game plan and played it very well frustrating the Colts for long periods. In the first half Callum and Johnny came close but failed to find the back of the net and Ollie hit the bar but the game remained goalless and it was a message of “keep patient lads” from Paul & Phil during the interval and after the break the Colts continued their attacks on the visitors goal. However whilst still goalless Lillington had their only chance of the game when their striker broke clear but Ben rushed out of his area and quickly snuffed out the chance and that was as close as they came such was the dominance the Colts had at the back with Lewis & Jacob looking particularly strong in the centre and Tyler having an impressive game on the left.
More chances came the Colts way and halfway through the half they at long last broke the deadlock when Johnny swivelled past his marker and with a small gap appearing at the near post he managed to find the back of the net. The score seemed to lift a bit of tension in the Colts and they added a number of fluent attacks before Callum broke free with ten minutes remaining and beat the advancing keeper to make the score 2-0.
A tough but rewarding evening with good performances right down the spine of the team with Paul & Frankie impressive in the midfield and Lewis & Jacob solid at the back but it was Tyler who was awarded the man of the match award.
The Colts then travelled to Stretton Athletic on a warm Sunday afternoon and again found their opponents well organised and difficult to break down but again Ben never really had a shot to save and the defence looked very solid.
The Colts started the game on the front foot with Ollie causing the home side problems down the right and Johnny being a constant threat in the middle. Johnny came close to opening the scoring when his shot hit the post and ran free and other chances came but were spurned as the Colts pushed for the opening goal. After twenty minutes the Colts did find the back of the net when Callum’s shot was only parried by the home keeper and Johnny pounced for his fortieth goal of the season. This was all that separated the teams at the break but the Colts were well worth their advantage.
After the break the Colts took even more territory and hit the post for a second time when Frankie skilfully controlled the ball and hit a shot on the volley against the woodwork. Shortly after Frankie was fouled just outside the box and from the resultant free kick Lewis hammered the ball home for the second goal. Blake then hit a post for the third time in the match and Johnny incredibly found the woodwork for a fourth time and Blake had a goal chalked out for offside but eventually the Colts did get the third goal that settled the game and again it was Johnny who beat the keeper from close in.
Jacob won the man of the match award for a solid centre half performance but the whole team played well and its on to Woodford on the 19th for the biggest game in the Colts history.

Crucial weekend for the Colts
Friday 3rd April 2009
The Colts have two games over the weekend and should they win both they will go level with leaders Woodloes at the top of the table with 46 points and with one game of the season to go. However two wins is easier to say than to achieve and the Colts face two very tough games. On Friday night the lads play host to fifth placed Lillington Rangers in their last home match of the season. Lillington are marooned in 5th place and whatever happens in their remaining fixtures that is where they shall stay but this is a good improvement from their previous seasons and as the tight 1-0 victory in early March showed they will be a very tough nut to crack.
Then on Sunday the Colts have another very tough game when they visit third placed Stretton Athletic who are very much in the hunt for promotion themselves. Although they would require other results to go in their favour with three matches left if they win all three they would be very close to a promotion place. We played the corresponding fixture with Stretton way back in October, the 3-1 victory being our first ever game at Leek Wootton. Since then our old friends from Stretton have done rather well and have picked up an impressive 34 points to date.
Over the years we have played some exciting games with Stretton and slightly have the better record with six wins to Stretton’s three with two games ending all square. With Woodloes now having finished their campaign they will be keen to watch out for the results of the chasing pack; the final chapter awaits!
