Woodford blown away
Monday 3rd December 2007
For the second time this season the Colt’s match with Woodford was played in gusty conditions and the Colt’s certainly made the best of the strong wind in the first half running up a 5-0 interval lead and it could have been more with a few goals chalked out for offside. Top scorer Johnny led the way with a hat trick, his third of the season, and the first half was also memorable for seeing Dan’s first ever goal for the Colts with the left back striking the ball into the back of the net from distance, Ollie completed the first half scoring.
Despite the lead Paul & Phil reminded the lads that the game was far from over with the visitors playing with the strong wind in their favour in the second half and they certainly increased their efforts and pushed the Colts hard which forced for a change in formation with an extra defender being added. This seemed to do the trick as Woodford were kept out for a while but their constant attacking eventually paid dividends with two goals midway through the half but JP was playing well in goal and man of the match Jacob was holding the defence together well. Despite the increased defending the Colts were still a threat in front of goal and Callum made the game safe with a strike ten minutes from time and a last minute goal from Blake made sure that the half finished equal, a creditable defending performance considering the strength of the wind.
It was a pity that the wind played such a dominant part in the match but the Colts certainly made the most of it and the win takes them to within 3 points of the leaders.

Christmas card photo to be held on Thursday 6th Dec
Monday 3rd December 2007
For our new members a little fun item that we do each year is to develop our very own Christmas Card which we send out to our sponsors, League officials and fellow team managers as we try and spread a little festive cheer throughout the local football area. This is the third year that we have done this and is as far as we know unique for this region.
The card has a team photo on the front with the lads wearing a Santa hat etc. and this year we shall take the photo after training on Thursday 6th December. Therefore can all Mum’s & Dad’s get out their Santa hats for the lads to wear on Thursday. If you have any other Christmas attire, such as a Santa beard or Happy Christmas sign these are also welcome. The lads should wear their red track suits or sweatshirts for the photo. If you cannot find your hat from last year they can be purchased for about a £1 in the local discount stores in Kenilworth.
Christmas is coming lads, let’s get in the mood!

Colts away cup fixtures continue
Tuesday 4th December 2007
In the three years of competitive fixtures the Colts really have had some bad luck in the Cup draws with only one home draw to date (that was this season against Henley Forest), and with the first round draw of the Supplementary Cup now announced by the League the Colts once again venture forth on their travels.
The Colts will visit Rugby based club Hillmorton Juniors in the first round which will no doubt be a tough challenge for the lads. Arguably the top match of the round is between last season’s League Cup runners-up Fenney Compton and fellow Division 1 side Tazmanian Cruiser Colts but another interesting tie is the match between the two basement clubs from the two divisions with Woodloes hosting Southam United Dynamos.
In the League Cup the three remaining Division 2 clubs all have tough draws with leaders Central Ajax taking on Wellesbourne, Balsall & Berkswell travel to Tazmanian Cruiser Juniors and arguably the toughest challenge is for Henley Forest (who knocked out the Colts on penalties) who play Division 1 leaders Alveston. Local neighbours Kenilworth Town complete the round with a home tie against Southam United Vipers.
All matches to be played on December 9th.

Lennie returns to lead the Falcons
Friday 7th December 2007
Our old friend Lennie is coming back to the UK on the weekend and he will bring his boots to play in the Falcons match against Leamington Hibs at Castle Farm on Saturday morning. Lennie is now living in his native Germany near Stuttgart and has joined a local club there but still misses the Colts and regularly logs on to our web site to keep a check up on the results so it will be good for him to see the lads again. He will be captain for the day and hopefully he will be able to get the Falcons back to winning ways following their recent 5-0 defeat at the hands of Balsall & Berkswell.
We have played the Hibs twice this season in friendly games, the Colts had a 4-0 pre-season victory but the Falcons missed out losing 5-1 back in early October. A stronger team is selected for Lennie’s return match so hopefully the Falcons fortunes will be reversed, kick off is at 11:00.

Cup Football returns for the Colts
Friday 7th December 2007
Following the Colts Round 1 League Cup exit at the hands of Henley Forest on penalties the lads now take part in the Supplementary Cup and just to keep up the tradition of bad luck in cup draws, we are on the road again with a visit to First Division side Hillmorton Juniors.
Hillmorton exited the League Cup at the hands of Balsall & Berkswell by a convincing score of 6-0 and will no doubt be looking to reverse their cup form on Sunday. Playing in Division 1 for the first time this season following their double promotion from last season’s Division 3 they have had a mixed bag of results and their results have fallen away a little of late but their 5-0 victory at high flying Fenny Compton showed that they are capable of some very good football on their day. They currently lie in 8th place in the Division with 15 points; a creditable effort for their first season at this level.
The Colts have only played Hillmorton twice before, both at the Under 9 age group and both games ended all square. Our first match with them was the second ever game played by the Colts and the boys ran up a 3-1 lead midway through the second half only for two late goals from Hillmorton seeing the points shared in a 3-3 draw. In the reverse fixture that season the Colts went into a 2-1 interval lead and then were well and truly put under pressure in the second half as the home side pushed hard for an equaliser. The Colts held firm until almost the last kick of the game when Hillmorton scored to make the score 2-2.
Despite the close past history between the two teams there’s got to be a winner on Sunday even if we have to go to penalties again – let’s hope not!

Falcons score five but only win by one
Monday 10th December 2007
The heavens opened on Saturday but with old friend Lennie back in Kenilworth the Falcons match with Leamington Hibs went ahead as planned. The Falcons started brightly and it was Lennie who opened the scoring with a shot from the edge of the area. Frankie then added a second and then Callum a third as the Falcons dominated affairs. However the lads then decided to help out the Hibs with not one but two own goals, one from James and a thunderous drive from Tyler! Well done lads very generous of you. As the weather deteriorated the game petered out and the Falcons just did enough to make it a happy return for Lennie.

Tough Luck on Colts
Monday 10th December 2007
Once again lady luck deserted the Colts as they exited the Supplementary Cup at the first stage at Division 1 Hillmorton Juniors. The Colts went into the game with the bare eleven due to unavailability and sickness and it resulted in a different formation with some of the lads playing in different positions but they all adapted very well indeed. Harry typified the effort, having never played in defence before he battled hard throughout and put in a very determined appearance at right back.
The opening stages appeared fairly even on a difficult playing surface but midway through the half a long punt from the impressive Hillmorton keeper caught the Colts defence square and their attacker whipped in behind and slotted home for the opening goal. The Colts tried to keep to their passing game but the sticky pitch made it difficult but chances continued to come at both ends and the Colts missed a great chance to equalise just before the interval when Frankie missed from the penalty spot after Johnny was tripped.
Although the first half was fairly equal with perhaps the home team shading it, the second half definitely belonged to the Colts as they continuously pushed for the equaliser and put the home side definitely on the back foot. A number of chances came and went and then man of the match Frankie broke free from defence beat three players and played a delightful through pass which Johnny ran on to and slotted home the equaliser with ten minutes left. This was thoroughly deserved and the Colts continued to push for the winner but with seconds left and Hillmorton won the game with a double injury time strike. It was hard to take for the Colts who had played well but with the game delicately poised at 1-1 it was there for the taking and the Division 1 side did just that. Good luck to Hillmorton in the later rounds and bad luck lads but let’s learn from the experience.

Yes it’s that time of year again and this Saturday is the Colts Christmas party. This year’s activity is rock climbing at the indoor National rock climbing centre at Warwick University. The lads need to be at the University Sports Centre at 09:00 for a couple of hours climbing under the guidance of the qualified instructors with a few of the Dad’s helping out. Please make sure that the lads bring with them their trainers and tracksuit for climbing.
After the climbing it’s a party for the lads back at the Clubhouse and the lads can be collected from 12:30 onwards – see you there.
PS I have heard that someone with a beard and red jacket might be popping in!

Colts just do enough to end the year on a high
Tuesday 18th December 2007
The Colts were below par on Sunday and looked ready for a hard earned rest as the Christmas break approached but they just did enough to beat a spirited Banbury Irish side that battled to the very end.
A number of changes were required including the key position of goalkeeper where Blake and Dan shared the gloves for the day and a reshuffle to a more defensive formation for this last game of 2007 perhaps resulted in a lethargic performance from the lads who attacked somewhat less than previous games and only occasionally troubled the impressive visiting keeper. When shots did come in the Banbury stopper seemed up to it and it was only Frankie that really looked effective in front of goal in the first half. He hit the post after 20 minutes but unfortunately there was nobody following in and the Irish defence cleared their lines. Not to be disappointed however Frankie continued to look for openings and with five minutes of the half remaining he found the back of the net with a shot from outside the area having beat three Irish defenders on his approach. The visitors were still very much in the game however and forced a few corners but Blake’s only real save came as the half neared the close and the Colts headed to the interval worth their slender lead.
Paul mentioned in the half-time chat that a second goal would secure the points and the Colts pushed early on for the decisive goal. Jake took a long free kick that the Banbury keeper held well and Ollie was clean through before once again being thwarted by the Irish keeper and despite having plenty of possession the lads didn’t create much else in the way of clear cut opportunities in the second period. However midway through the half they did in the end get the second goal. Man of the Match Frankie took one of his trademark free kicks that struck the bar and in the scramble that followed Blake pounced from close in to score the decisive second goal.
Once again Banbury rallied strongly and probably had their best period of the game in the closing stages but the defence played well and kept the Irish lads shooting from distance and Dan wasn’t severely troubled.
So not the most fluent or exciting of games to finish the year, but the lads secured the points against a tough and hard working Banbury side that can take some credit for their efforts despite going home empty handed. The win was a crucial one for the Colts as all their main rivals slipped up with draws and the top of the table suggests an exciting new year ahead.
