Run-in starts at Lillington
Friday 27th February 2009
The finishing line is in sight; with just over a month to go in the season the Colts start their run-in with an away fixture at Lillington Rangers. Whereas the Colts had a break from League action last week Lillington got back on the winning trail with a 7-3 demolition of mid-table Norton Lindsey a result which should see them guarantee fifth place in the League. The gap to the four clubs above is surely too big and a nice cushion has built up between them and sixth place Norton Lindsey which will give the Leamington based club a decent return for their efforts and a big improvement from last season.
This is the first time that the Colts have played Lillington this season; we have the return game planned for the end of the month, but we have played them on three occasions in the past. At Under 10 level we visited them in the cup coming out convincing winners at 7-2 including a hat trick from Blake and then last year we played them for the only time in the League when we won both games 6-2 away and 7-1 at home.
With six games to go and four teams still in with a decent shout of the title it’s building up for an exciting end to the season and it starts on Sunday at Lillington.

Town too strong for the Colts
Monday 23rd February 2009
Local bragging rights were up for grabs on Sunday as the Colts played host to Kenilworth Town in a friendly match following both sides having had their league games postponed. Town arrived with a strong and big squad and quickly went on the attack up the slope with the Colts forced somewhat deeper than planned. After about 10 minutes the visitors went in front with a quality goal from the edge of the box which gave Ben no chance but the Colts came back well and had a number of chances themselves as the half progressed. Frankie went close following a short corner move with Blake and Blake also had a chance at the back post before the ball ran too far ahead of him to get a decent contact.
After 20 minutes the Colts did score (which happened to be their first ever goal against the Town) when Frankie pounced on a lose ball close in when an Ollie corner hadn’t been properly cleared. The Colts then had a very good shout for a penalty turned down as Frankie was tripped in the box as he lined up a shot (thanks Phil) but the half finished as it started with Town back on the attack and they got a second goal just before the interval when their left sided attack wasn’t properly cleared and another shot from the edge of the box hit the back of the net.
In fairness the visitors deserved their half-time lead and with the slope in their favour and a 2-1 interval lead things were going to be tough in the second half for the Colts. However as the half progressed it was the Colts who very much had the upper hand and they enjoyed their best period of the match, Johnny went close twice with the Town keeper saving well and Ollie also forced the Town keeper to save low down. Then Dan made a great run from deep and hit a shot from distance that just flew past the post and Blake had a great chance at the back post but couldn’t properly connect and the chance went begging. Despite their chances however they couldn’t equalise and the Division 1 side made them pay with two late goals, one which took an unlucky deflection and looped over Ben and then a fantastic strike from deep from the Town centre half as the Colts only half cleared a corner.
So once again Town take the honours with a 4-1 victory but the Colts can take pride in providing them with a stiff challenge. Town’s new signing in the centre of midfield had a great game and he certainly made a big difference but the Colts opposite number also played well and Frankie took the man of the match award for an industrious and inventive game. There were also good performances from Dan, Lewis, Johnny and Blake to name but a few.
Paul wanted a stern test for the lads in advance of a tricky run-in and the Colts certainly had it from their local rivals who once again showed what a quality side they are but the Colts are not far behind.

Colts awarded points verses Crick
Friday 20th February 2009
The Colts have been awarded the points in the postponed match verses Crick Colts from way back on November 2nd as Crick failed to fulfil the fixture and were found in breach of the League rules. This has occurred a number of times this year in the various age groups and in our division leaders Woodloes were also required to forfeit the points in their cancelled game with Stretton Athletic. The result of these League decisions means that it’s now very tight at the top of the division with the Colts just 3 points behind leaders Woodloes but with a game in hand. However it’s not a two horse race as Woodford and Stretton both have games in hand and if they win these there will be just 3 points that separate the four clubs – a real exciting finish to the season awaits.

Colts entertain Town in friendly
Friday 20th February 2009
With no league game this week the Colts have arranged a friendly match against old friends Kenilworth Town. The Town are riding high in Division 1 and it will certainly be a good test for the lads. Of all the teams that the Colts have played the Town are probably the one where we have the poorest record having yet to score against them in the eight games we have played. We have recorded two goalless draws against them but other than that it’s been straight defeats with this year’s pre-season friendly 0-2 reverse being the last time that we played each other. Kick off is at 2:30 at Leek Wootton.

Johnny breaks scoring record as the Colts hit their biggest win of the season
Monday 16th February 2009
Johnny hit six goals as the Colts beat Banbury Irish 9-1 on Sunday as they got to some action after a few weeks of due to the weather. The Colts looked a little rusty to start with but gradually got in the groove and got their passing game going which created a series of chances. Johnny was the chief beneficiary with a first half hat trick and Frankie added a fourth following a short corner move. They weren’t having it all their own way however and Banbury managed to get on the score sheet in the closing minutes but Johnny had the final say of the half as he added his fourth goal to make sure that the Colts went into the half time chat as convincing 5-1 leaders.
Playing up the slope the Colts continued their attacking passing game in the second half and numerous chances were created. Johnny added a sixth goal; his fifth to equal his goal scoring record, and Frankie also added to his daily tally before the impressive Blake got on the scoring act as he benefited from a rebound off the post following Johnny’s shot. The crowd were urging Johnny to get his sixth goal and break a new record and he duly obliged in the closing minutes to complete the Colts biggest win of the season by 9-1.
Johnny deservedly received the man of the match award but there were other good performances in particular from Blake, Callum, Frankie & Tyler and despite taking the head lines Johnny would be the first to admit that it was a fine team effort.

Fingers crossed the lads can kick a football again this weekend
Friday 13th February 2009
The pitch is in good condition and last weeks postponed match with Banbury Irish is planned to go ahead this Sunday weather permitting. The Colts will be looking to do the double over the Oxfordshire club following the 5-2 victory in November but no doubt the Irish will be fully up for a game and looking to get their first League victory of the season so a tough game will no doubt be on the cards.

Arctic conditions mean no football but still plenty of fun
Monday 9th February 2009
The Colts, like every other team in the League, had their game cancelled on Sunday due to the arctic conditions but the lads still had a bit of fun when a photographer from the Sunday People visited Leek Wootton for a photo shoot in preparation of the JSP newspaper pullout section in next weeks Sunday People. All smiles and poses by the lads and lets see how they look in print next week.

Banbury Irish return to Leek Wootton
Friday 6th February 2009
Weather permitting this Sunday’s “away” fixture with Banbury Irish has been switched to Leek Wootton as the Irish pitch is unplayable and thus the lads from Banbury will make their second visit this season following our 5-2 victory over them in November when a brace each from Ollie & Johnny and a further goal from Frankie gained the points.
Since that game the Colts have only dropped points against leaders Woodloes in the 3-3 draw just before Christmas but Irish have continued to find the going tough and points remain hard to come by despite them putting in some close performances of late; they remain in 10th position in the League with two points.
This will be the sixth time that the Colts have played Banbury Irish and so far we have a 100% record although some of the games have been close affairs. Other than this season’s 3 goal margin the one convincing win was the away game last year where a healthy 8-2 victory was achieved thanks in part to a brace from Johnny and a hat trick from Frankie; all other games have been low scoring affairs with the Colts just edging it.

On Sunday 8th February the Colts take the trip to play on one of the best pitches in the League when they play Banbury Irish and then on February 22nd the Colts play host to Crick Colts who we met on the opening day of the season and we finish this run of games with a visit to Leamington based club Lillington Rangers on Sunday March 1st. Three tough games for the Colts but fingers crossed we can keep up our winning streak.
