Steady Colts nudge past an improving Wellesbourne
Monday 26th January 2009
The Colts kept up their winning run against visitors Wellesbourne Wanderers Juniors with a 3-0 victory which said a lot for the visitor’s defensive game which was very impressive at times and they certainly kept the game entertainingly close when perhaps other opponents might have cracked against some long periods of Colts pressure.
Playing with the slope in their favour the Colts scored all three goals in the first half and quickly put the visitors on the back foot with some early pressure and it paid off when Johnny scored twice in the opening ten minutes. Once when he raced free of the last man to beat the advancing keeper and secondly as he skilfully found the back of the net from an acute angle after the keeper had forced him wide. Both goals owed a lot to good passes the first from Lewis and the second a delightful first touch pass from Blake.
The Colts continued to press with Callum, Johnny and Blake (twice) all going agonisingly close but Wellesbourne defended like tigers at times to clear their lines and to keep them in the game. On the attacking front thanks to some strong Colts defending they didn’t offer too much and the closest they came to scoring was when a short back pass was intercepted but the resultant shot went wide.
With the half coming to a close, Callum received a ball from Lewis and with his back to goal he controlled it and in one movement smashed the ball home from the edge of the box; a quality goal and one which sent the Colts into a three goal interval lead.
Occasionally in the first half Wellesbourne had a few break away attacks against the slope but after the break despite having the slope advantage it was the Colts that had the majority of possession and keeper Ben was a distant onlooker for most of the half. The impressive Wellesbourne keeper kept a grip of everything that came his way and despite playing most of the half camped in their opponents half the Colts couldn’t add to their first half tally and an entertaining game petered out somewhat.
So another three points for the lads and good performances from Lewis, Jacob and man of the match Kris who played a skilful wing back game on the right. A break next week to recharge our batteries before we push hard for promotion in what is becoming an increasingly tight division with four teams all in the hunt for honours.

Colts entertain Wellesbourne
Friday 23rd January 2009
Following our first ever game with Wellesbourne Wanderers Juniors two weeks ago we now promptly meet them a second time as we hope to gain our second double of the season following last weeks 5-1 defeat of Norton Lindsey. Wellesbourne also scored 5 last week but unfortunately they let in 7 as they lost to Crick in a rugby style result.
Two weeks ago at Moreton Morrell the Colts won 6-2 in an entertaining game where the Colts took control from the start but the home side came back strongly at the end and the Colts will have to be on top form to maintain their winning sequence.
Wellesbourne currently lie in 9th place with their 4 points coming from a draw with Banbury Irish and a 2-1 victory over Southam United Dynamoes.

Norton Lindsey hit for five
Monday 19th January 2009
The Colts eased to a comfortable win against mid-table Norton Lindsey thanks in the main to a 4 goal first half performance up the slope when the lads played their best football.
In bright sunshine it was the home side that started brightly with Ollie causing problems on the right and they quickly went into a two-goal lead with Johnny and Frankie finding the back of the net. A few other chances came and went but then a long Norton ball over the top caught out the Colts defence and the visitors got one back but a further goal apiece from Johnny & man of the match Frankie both with shots from the edge of the box eased the Colts into a 4-1 interval lead.
With the slope in the favour it was expected that the Colts would significantly add to their tally but they seemed to lose momentum in the second half and only a strike from Lewis midway through the half was all they had to show for their second half efforts. Callum hit a post and there were other close efforts but the Colts passing game seemed to drift away somewhat after the interval perhaps not helped but the many changes in personnel.
So although not a vintage performance a 5-1 score line should never be taken for granted and the three points maintain the Colts 2nd place in the League.

Colts entertain old rivals Norton Lindsey
Friday 16th January 2009
The Colts have their first home game of the year when they entertain Norton Lindsey who they beat 8-2 in the away fixture earlier in the season. Both teams had good wins last week, Norton Lindsey beating fourth placed Lillington Rangers 2-1 and of course the Colts defeating Wellesbourne Wanderers 6-2. After a slow start to the season Norton Lindsey have improved of late and currently lie mid table and will no doubt be looking for some revenge on Sunday from their reverse in November.
The Colts have played Norton Lindsey more times than any other team in their short history and in general the games have been fairly tight with 4 draws and 5 one goal differences in the scores with last years 7-3 victory and this seasons 8-2 success being the only sizeable victories of note. Overall The Colts have slightly the better of things. Having met first at Under 9 age group the overall record between the two teams is 5 wins for the Colts, 3 wins for Norton Lindsey and 4 draws. The three wins for Norton however all came at the under 9 age group and so of late the Colts have been quite dominant.
A win for the Colts will see them maintain 2nd place in the division. Table toppers Woodloes Juniors travel the short distance to Lillington Rangers whilst third place Woodford visit Southam United Dynamoes.

Colts get back on the pitch and take the points
Monday 12th January 2009
Although you could feel the hard base there was enough of a soft surface to take a stud and the game at Wellesbourne was played as the lads got their boots on again for the first time in a month.
Playing with the slope in the first half the Colts eased into a four goal interval lead with a couple of goals each from Ollie and Johnny and it could have been more as two strikes were chalked off for offside. The home side had the occasional break away but the crisp passing game of the Colts ensured a high amount of possession and with it territory.
After the break the Colts continued to attack and further strikes from Johnny for his hat trick and then from Blake saw the lads go six goals to the good. The home side definitely caused the Colts some problems in the second half and they managed to get on the score sheet near the end with two goals one of which was a stunning shot from distance for a final score of 2-6.
Considering the lads haven’t even had a training session for a month let alone a match it was pleasing to see the Colts good passing game back in action and it was something that the Wellesbourne manager mentioned at the close saying that we were the best footballing team they have met this season; perhaps we need another month off!

Weather permitting the Colts visit Wellesbourne
Friday 9th January 2009
Fingers crossed that the frozen pitches thaw out in time for Sunday when the Colts travel to Wellesbourne Wanderers for what is the first competitive match between the two sides. The Falcons have played them a couple of times previously in friendly games and they also met at the Southam tournament last season when they fought out a draw however this will be the first time that the Colts have played the new team from Wellesbourne.
Being in their debut season Wellesbourne have found the going a little tough but have managed a few points along the way and currently lie in 9th place with their 4 points coming from a draw with Banbury Irish and a 2-1 victory over Southam United Dynamoes.

Frost calls a halt to New Year opener
Monday 5th January 2009
Hopefully not a thing to come but the heavy frost meant that Sunday’s friendly match with Tazmanian Cruiser Colts was postponed. Let’s hope for an improvement to the weather in time for our first league game of 2009 at Wellesbourne Wanderers Juniors next Sunday.

New Year starts in friendly fashion
Friday 2nd January 2009
The Colts open up their New Year activities with a friendly game against Tazmanian Cruiser Colts from Division 1. The Colts have only met Taz Colts once and that was in their own tournament at Under 10 age group when the teams fought out a goalless draw despite the Colts hitting the woodwork twice. Both teams progressed to the semi-finals that day but it was the host club that made it to the final before losing to our semi-final victors Taz Cruiser Juniors.
This season the Leamington based club have improved of late following a slow start to the season and currently lie in 11th place in Division 1 with 9 points to their account but it’s very tight and just one more win would place them mid table. This season Taz Colts went out of the Cup to Woodloes Juniors who currently top our Division 2. Kick off is at Leek Wootton at 14:30.
