Colts play with style but just miss out

Monday 22nd June 2009

The Colts played some stylish football at the Alcester tournament when their quick passing game saw them run up three quick wins and then two draws in their final two matches saw them qualify for the semi finals.

The Colts dominated their opening two matches when Evesham league sides Bretherton and Alcester Town winning 1-0 and 3-0 thanks to goals from Frankie & Blake. The next two games were much tougher as fancied Stratford Town & Pershore faced the Colts. Yet again the Colts played some great football and Frankie hit a penalty to defeat Stratford and a goalless draw with a strong Pershore team had the Colts leading the group with one game to play. Evesham Robbins could still qualify themselves and the Colts lost some of the flowing passing & move play in this game and they conceded their first goal of the afternoon halfway through the game. Despite leading the group a defeat was likely to eliminate the Colts and so it was a relief when straight from the kick off Frankie scored his fifth goal of the afternoon to equalise and the draw was sufficient to send the Colts through but only as runners-up.

The semi-final was against Evesham United who were a strong team and they just managed to edge out the Colts 1-0. The goal came right at the end of the first half and despite pushing hard in the second half the Colts couldn’t get an equaliser and for the third time in four seasons the Colts exited the tournament at the semi-final stage.

Despite the disappointment there was some very good football played. Frankie may have got the headlines with a very skilful performance topped with his five goal haul but there were good performances throughout the team with Ollie having his best tournament performance of the season and Lewis looking impressive in goal.

Season comes to a close at Alcester

Friday 19th June 2009

The Colts come towards the end of their season when they visit our old friends at Alcester in what is traditionally a very friendly & fun tournament. The tournament normally has many teams who are not so familiar to ourselves as they play in the Evesham and Central Warwickshire leagues.

This is the third occasion that the lads have played at Alcester and although last season we went out in the group stage on the two previous occasions the Colts made the semi-finals just missing out on a final berth by losing out to the eventual winners.

Rainy days and laughter

Monday 8th June 2009

Fun and laughs all the way in Minehead where the Colts had their annual tour at the Butlins camp. Despite the wet weekend there was plenty to smile about as the lads had some great fun on all of the rides and water park and the weekend also included some success on the football front.

On Saturday afternoon the Colts moved from the wet Minehead to the surprisingly dry Bridgewater where they took part in the Rhode Lane Wanderers tournament against clubs from the North Somerset region. Two mixed teams were entered and two sets of mixed results occurred. The Colts won their group and went straight through to the play-off final whereas the Falcons seemed to have draw after draw and with the occasional defeat they ended up propping up their group. However this ensured a final berth in the Plate competition where they defeated Staplegrove on penalties to take home the Plate award.

Meanwhile the Colts played host club Rhode Lane Wanderers in a particularly tight final which unfortunately they lost 1-0; their first defeat of the day and thus they came runners-up in the tournament – not a bad performance considering the lads were still up in the early hours the night before.

It was a friendly tournament and the Colts would like to thank our hosts for making us feel very welcome.

Back to Minehead and it’s still raining, obviously a black cloud has hovered above the town all day but with some much indoor entertainment the lads, not to mention the dads had a great evenings entertainment followed by another great and dryer day on the Sunday. All in all a successful weekend away and a great way to end the season.

Awards, awards and more awards

Friday 5th June 2009

The Colts annual awards took place on Thursday evening when the lads turned up for an evening of fun & silverware. Following a dramatic opening movie of the season suitably accompanied by appropriate fanfare – well that of the Emerson Lake and Palmer variety, it was on to a season review of all of the lads as they received their commemorative awards to celebrate the most successful season in the Colts short history.

After the food break it was down to the serious stuff and congratulations to James & Tyler who were jointly awarded Clubman of the Year for two outstanding contributions to the team over the year. Despite some strong competition Jacob deservedly took the Most Improved Player of the Year in recognition of some stupendous defensive performances over the season and Johnny received a special award for his goal scoring exploits over the two years that he has been with the Colts; 128 goals in two and a bit seasons is a tremendous return and we sadly wish him well as he moves on to pastures new.

In usual Colts awards night fashion it was then on to the result of the Player of the Season vote and once again it was the Apprentice music that accompanied the screen show of the 16 candidates gradually narrowed down to the final four and then two and then as the tension was building it was Frankie who came out on top – congratulations to him a very worthy winner reflecting a great season.

The final award was the Managers Award awarded for overall top performance over the season and this year it was awarded to Blake who has had a great season in all aspects of the Colts activities this year, training well and of course playing well throughout the year. Blake is one of the original members of the team and it was a well received award by all of his colleagues.

Fun and laughs throughout the evening and it was then time to get ready for the tour the next day – the lads are tremendously excited about the weekend – the festivities have obviously just got underway?
