Our new friends from Canada prove too strong

Monday 30th March 2009

The Colts had their first taste of international football on Saturday in a friendly with Red Deer Renegades from Alberta who proved too strong on the day. They were a little bigger, stronger & older and it told on a blustery day at Leek Wootton.

The Colts started brightly on the attack but the visitors held firm and then broke with lightening speed not once, not twice but three times in the opening 5 minutes and with the game hardly began the result was already out of reach of the home side as the visitors rattled up an early 3 goal lead. Their quick passing and speed on attack caught the Colts cold and they made the hosts pay with some clinical strikes.

To their credit the Colts did their best to stay in the game and just one more goal came in the opening half just before the close but at 0-4 the Colts were somewhat shaken at the interval. In the second half the Canadians hit two more goals to seal the win at a somewhat large 0-6 but the Colts did manage to get the ball into the net on one occasion when Callum rounded the keeper only to be pulled back for offside.

Matty & George made their Colts debuts on the day and both had good games along with Lewis, Frankie & man of the match Paul.

After the game there was plenty of social activity in the club house as both sets of players made friends along with some friendly banter between the adults. We hope that our guests enjoyed their stay and with a 6-0 victory in their back pocket along with some happy memories of their time in the club house we hope that they return to Canada with some warm feelings about the Colts.

Colts go international

Friday 27th March 2009

The Colts are pleased to welcome the Red Deer Renegades to Leek Wootton on Saturday for a friendly tour game with a 2:30 kick off. The Renegades come from the state of Alberta in Canada and are currently in the UK on a 12 day tour taking in a trip to Wembley, a visit to last weeks Premiership game between WBA & Bolton Wanderers and some local games including matches with Southam Utd, Wellesbourne and Woodford Utd as well as the Colts. On Tuesday this week they played a mini round-robin tournament with the two under 12 teams from Southam beating Division 1 side Vipers 1-0 and Division 2 side Dynamoes 3-0. Colts forward Johnny went to see the games and said that they are a neat passing team with plenty of pace so the Colts should be in for an exciting game of football without the usual pressure of trying to secure league points.

The Colts will be giving debuts to George and Matty during the game to see how they get on in a competitive match after a few months of training so good luck to them and a big welcome to our visitors from Canada.

Another Colts victory as home straight comes into sight

Monday 27th March 2009

Just three games left for the Colts as they strive for their first title success but they were made to work hard for their victory at a gusty Leek Wootton on Sunday by a dogged Southam side that soaked up a lot of Colts pressure with some tenacious tackling.

The Colts kicked with the slope in the first half and soon went on the attack and Johnny had a couple of early chances but the Southam keeper was equal to him and kept his goal in tact. The woodwork then came to Southam’s assistance not once but twice as the Colts pushed hard for the opening goal without any joy. In the end it was a bit of quality by Frankie that broke the deadlock on 18 minutes. He skilfully took control of a lose ball at the edge of the box looked up and coolly placed it into the bottom corner out of the reach of the Southam keeper. Five minutes later Dan then scored his first goal of the season with a similar goal from the edge of the box and just before half time Callum scored the Colts third when he ran on to a through pass from Paul and walloped the ball into the top corner. Three quality goals that saw the Colts into a comfortable interval lead despite the good tackling of the visitors roared on by their vociferous supporters.

Southam had barely got into the Colts half in the first half but with the slope in their favour were hoping for better things in the second half but straight from the kick off the Colts added a fourth when Johnny scored from close in. The Colts continued their attacking play and their fifth and best goal of the afternoon came after 10 minutes of the second half when Dan took receipt of a short corner cut inside and hammered the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box.

Southam’s forays into the Colts half remained infrequent but they did get on the score sheet when their strong striker forced the ball home after chasing down a long punt over the Colts defence. Blake finished matters off near the end when he tucked away a lose ball at the far post and at 6-1 the Colts were pretty convincing winners but basement club Southam battled hard throughout and can take some credit from their performance particularly at the back.

Lewis deservedly took the man of the match award for a commanding display at the back where he controlled the Colts game plan for long periods and rarely looked in any trouble.

Colts host Southam

Friday 20th March 2009

This Sunday the Colts play their penultimate home league match of the season when they host basement club Southam United Dynamoes. The Colts won the corresponding fixture on a sunny afternoon in October by a score of 6-0 with Johnny scoring 5 and Blake adding the other.

Since their opening day 4-1 victory against Wellesbourne the Dynamoes have had a tough time with only a 2-2 draw against Crick Colts adding to their tally. However with local lads Johnny & Tyler in our ranks the Southam will surely provide a tough challenge.

Canadian Friendly arranged

Friday 13th March 2009

The Colts are pleased to announce a friendly match with touring Canadian Under 12 football club (or soccer as they call it) Red Deer Renegades on Saturday 28th March at Leek Wootton, kick off at 2:00 p.m.

The Red Deer Renegades come from Alberta in western Canada near the city of Edmonton. It’s still pretty cold over there and they will still be living in a pretty white climate at the moment as the Canadian winters are long & fierce; hence a lot of football is played in Canada in large indoor arenas with an Astroturf pitch. Colts Manager Paul has played football in Canada during his career and added that “This is a great opportunity for the Colts to give a friendly welcome to some fellow football players from the other side of the world and also give the lads an opportunity of playing against players who play a little different to how we do and will be a good part of the lads football education.”

Brilliant Colts topple leaders

Sunday 8th March 2009

The Colts were well fired up for the top of the table clash with local rivals Woodloes Juniors and deservedly took the points with a 5-2 victory in squally conditions at Leek Wootton.

Attacking with the slope in their favour the Colts quickly put the visitors on the back foot and they had a couple of early chances to open the scoring but they weren’t taken. However after five minutes the Colts did take the lead when Johnny won the ball and attacked the Woodloes left before firing in a low cross that Callum slotted home from close range. The Colts continued to apply the pressure and the leaders looked a little rattled at the back with Johnny going close with a one on one with the Woodloes keeper who saved well. However the Colts didn’t have to wait long for their second goal. Ollie’s strong throw was initially lost by Frankie but he won the ball back and laid it back to Johnny who smashed the ball home from the edge of the box.

At two goals down the visitors then raised their game and had the odd foray into Colts territory and as the half progressed they played some nice passing football and looked much more dangerous. From one attack down the Colts right they crossed and scored at the back post. The game was much more even at this point and the Colts were a little fortunate to get a third just before the interval when Ollie shot from distance and the Woodloes keeper misjudged it and it went into the corner for a 3-1 half-time lead.

Notwithstanding the visitors fight back the Colts were well worth their first half lead but with the slope and a strengthening wind against them the Colts were under pressure for the first ten minutes of the second half but despite their territory and pressure Woodloes never really threatened the Colts goal with Lewis and Jacob soaking up a lot of the pressure with Ben mopping up nicely any balls that cleared the back line.

After soaking up the pressure the Colts then applied the sucker punch on the break when Lewis’s through ball found the nippy Callum who raced clear of his marker and he skilfully rifled the ball into the back of the net. Shortly after Johnny then thought he added a fifth in almost identical fashion but was harshly adjudged offside. However he soon got his revenge when he skilfully slotted home with the outside of his boot for a 5-1 lead.

To their credit Woodloes kept pressing and got a second goal with five minutes remaining but it was too little too late and the Colts secured a valuable three points that sees them go level top with Woodloes with one game in hand. It’s far from over but the win puts them in a strong position with four games left.

Callum had his best match of the season and took home the man of the match award to go with his two goals but there were also good games throughout the team particularly from Lewis, Johnny, Dan and Clark.

Top of the Table Clash this weekend

Friday 6th March 2009

Arguably the most important match of the season awaits the Colts this weekend when they play host to near rivals Woodloes in a top of the table clash at Leek Wootton. The Warwick based club are three points ahead of the Colts but have played a game more and the winners on Sunday have a very good chance of promotion although third place Woodford are equally in the mix.

The Colts are the only team to stop Woodloes winning this season when they played out an exciting 3-3 draw in December with Johnny, Ollie & Harry netting for the Colts. The only other points they have dropped is due to a rule infringement which saw them forfeit the game against Stretton Athletic. Last week they got back to action following a few weeks of with a 3-0 victory at Norton Lindsey.

There haven’t been too many games between the two sides in the past with Woodloes having the better of things. Last year at under 11 age group Woodloes won two close friendlies and this year’s earlier league match being the only other time that the two sides have met.

Colts grind out a one goal win

Wednesday 4th March 2009

The run in was always going to be tough and the lads got a taste of it on Sunday in a battling match at Lillington. The bumpy and small pitch certainly didn’t favour the Colts passing game and the hosts certainly made sure that the Colts would have to work hard for the points.

The compact play in the midfield made attacking chances hard to come by but the Colts had a few chances in the first half with Paul having a shot saved by the keeper and Lewis just heading over the bar. In defence Lewis was having an impressive game and was ensuring that Lillington didn’t cause too many problems with a few long balls having to be dealt with by Ben and the half time whistle blew it was becoming obvious that perhaps one goal would settle this game.

Just after the restart Lillington had their best chance of the match with a shot that Ben pushed past the post but apart from that the defence coped well with what they had to offer. Ollie and Callum were causing the home team some problems and a few chances came the Colts way with Ollie hitting the bar although he was adjudged offside.

Although still goal less it was the Colts who looked the more likely to score and with ten minutes left captain Frankie launched a fantastic lob from distance which beat the keeper and landed in the back of the net. The lads were relieved that they had managed to get their noses in front and managed to see out the game without to much concern. Frankie thought he had added a second as he rounded the keeper to score but yet again the linesman had his flag up.

Lewis took the man of the match award but there were also good performances from Ben, Frankie & Dan. So a tight game and one where the Colts had to dig deep on a poor pitch that hindered them somewhat. So not a great game or performance, but its three more vital points in the bank in the run in to promotion; next week it’s the top of the table clash with Woodloes.
