Colts reach final of Brinklow tournament
Sunday 31st May 2009
The Colts got back into tournament action at the weekend when they visited Coventry league club Brinklow and had a successful morning reaching the final before losing out to old rivals Coventry Jaguar.
Some changes for next season were considered including some positional ones and it worked well once the obligatory opening goalless draw was put aside, against the home club. The Colts did get the ball in the net once but it was disallowed and an opening point was all that was achieved despite having the majority of the chances. In their second game however, against Bedworth United, the Colts did get on the score sheet when Frankie found the back of the net and that was enough to take the points and set them on their way. A 3-1 victory over Rugby Town then followed with goals from Brad, Zak & Kris and a comfortable 4-0 win over Leamington Hibs Colts thanks to goals from Lewis (2), Frankie & Brad ensured that the Colts topped their group.
In the semi-final it was the home club Brinklow who stood in the way of a final berth but the Colts made sure that they raised their game and Frankie having an inspired tournament up front scored two good goals and then Brad hit a third in a comfortable 3-0 victory that silenced the home supporters and set up a battle with Coventry Jaguar in the final.
The Colts started the final on the attack and had the best of the opening exchanges but then the Jag scored from their first attack when a shot was unluckily deflected past Lewis and from then on the Colts were chasing the game against a good side who added a second goal, again deflected, to settle the score in the Coventry sides favour by 2-0. Although both goals were slightly unlucky the Jag deserved their victory but the Colts can be pleased for their morning’s work at a very sunny Brinklow.

Need we say more?
Well probably it’s been a long journey and on Wednesday evening at Central Ajax the Colts brought to an end their most successful season to date when they put aside two league defeats against Woodford and deservedly beat them 2-1 in a game that was far more one-sided than the score line suggests. The Colts were first to the ball, more creative in midfield, were tight at the back and created a host of chances that on another day would have resulted in a hat full. However in the end they had to keep their concentration and make sure that Woodford were kept at a distance from their goal as a late score made the end a little less comfortable than it should have been.
In the pre-match talk Paul mentioned that we owed Woodford a performance, the lads had played well all season except for the two games against Woodford when two below par performances deservedly got nothing. The lads listened and didn’t disappoint and there were some very good performances throughout the team. Paul, Tyler, Callum, Blake and Lewis were particularly impressive and had some of their best games of the season but all of the lads put in a shift and in the end they got the result they richly deserved.
The early exchanges set the tone of the match with The Colts on the attack and a few chances came and went before on 18 minutes the Colts got the decisive break through their attacking play deserved. Blake won the ball in midfield on the right and then got to the goal line before pulling the ball back to Harry who “pulled the trigger” in impressive fashion and smashed the ball into the back of the net. Johnny then went very close to adding a second with a couple of shots that just went wide and the expansive playing style that the Colts adopted was stretching the Woodford defence and creating plenty of chances for the front two.
At the other end Woodford tried to break the Colts back line but time and time again the well marshalled defence held firm winning key tackles and restricting Woodford to a few hopeful long balls. On one they almost got through but Paul rushed back and snuffed out the danger and at half time Ben had hardly had a touch in goal and the Colts were well worth their lead.
After the interval the same game pattern resulted as the Colts had all of the chances. Johnny was unlucky when he picked up a lose ball and beat the advancing keeper only to see his shot rebound off the post and Woodford cleared their lines. Frankie was continuing to spray the ball from the middle and Callum and Blake were making good use of the wide pitch. Dan then came into an attacking role from the back and as he advanced down the line he was brought down and from the resultant free kick the Colts got the crucial second goal. Lewis planted the ball far post and Johnny got there first to put the ball into the corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
As the Colts pushed to kill off the game Johnny hit the bar and the killer third goal didn’t come. At the other end Woodford still hadn’t created anything but a slip by Lewis let in the Woodford forward but Jacob quickly got back to clear up and the chance was gone.
With 15 minutes left Woodford did get on the score sheet. The Colts lost the ball on the half way line and a through ball found the Woodford attacker who’s shot was saved by Ben but he couldn’t hold on to it and the attacker put home the rebound to make the score 2-1. This was the first real action that Ben had had all night such was the control that the Colts had but to their credit despite being outplayed for most of the match Woodford were still very much in the game as we entered the final stages and they almost did get an equaliser. Ben was flagged for overstepping his line with a kick out and from the resultant free kick substitute Ollie was on hand to clear the ball from the line and the Colts cleared the danger.
The Colts then played out time still very much in control and when the whistle went there was some great celebrations as the Colts secured their first ever championship, richly deserved on the performances, not just tonight but throughout the season. The Colts were the only team to beat every other team in the division and played some very good passing football throughout and will optimistically look forward to the tougher challenge of Division 1 football next season.

Season comes to a close with play-off final
Tuesday 19th May 2009
It’s been a long season and it comes to an end on Wednesday evening when the Colts play Woodford United in a play-off game for the championship of Division 2. Both sides are guaranteed promotion next season so this will effectively be a cup final with the winners taking the championship trophy with the losers taking the runners-up spot.
Woodford will start as favourites having twice defeated the Colts this season, 3-2 in October and a crushing 6-2 in April in the Colts last league game of the season. Woodford are certainly on a roll having won a series of games towards the end of the season and will enter the game full of confidence however the Colts too are in confident mood having had a series of successful tournaments during May including a victory at Leamington Brakes.
Kick off is at 6:30 at the Central Ajax ground just outside Warwick.

Falcons reach Southam semis
Monday 18th May 2009
Two teams were entered in the Southam tournament on Sunday and both the Colts & the Falcons were in with a shout with one group game left to play. The Colts needed to win to secure top spot in the group having just turned over the impressive Coventry Jaguar 2-1 but in their final game against Southam United Vipers they lost their only game of the day by the same score despite taking the lead.
With a semi-final place within sniffing distance the lads were disappointed but the Falcons made sure that there was some good news for the lads when they went one better and two goals from Blake secured a final game victory over Southam United Dynamoes to reach the semi-final in second place in the group.
The semi-final against Coventry Jaguar was a tight affair with both teams cancelling each other out with few real goal scoring opportunities. However in the last few seconds of extra time with penalty kicks just moments away the Coventry Jaguar forward let fly from distance and found the back of the net, an impressive goal. The Falcons kicked off and then the whistle went and the only goal they conceded all day was enough to send them home.
So no success this week but both teams played well and despite the cold and showery weather the lads all enjoyed themselves.

More Tournament success for the Colts
Monday 11th May 2009
The Colts successfully defended their title at the Leamington Brakes tournament in a small competition comprising of just four teams, two from the home club and Bedworth United joined the Colts in an eight game group stage where each team played each other twice to decide the ranking for the semi-final berths.
On the small pitches used for the group stages the Colts found it difficult to get their passing game going and had two narrow 1-0 defeats with every other game being a draw. After the eight group games the Colts only had one goal from Brad to show for their efforts with 5 goalless draws in their portfolio of matches.
It’s fair to say that the Colts played the tournament set-up to their advantage and took the group games pretty lightly and made sure that all eight players had plenty of pitch time and crucially plenty of rest before the more serious semi-finals and finals.
It was thus no surprise that the Colts finished fourth in the group which paired them with Bedworth United that had won most of their games in the group stage including one against the Colts by a solitary goal. However on the bigger pitch in the semi-final the Colts raised their game and put the unbeaten Bedworth on the back foot with a strong performance. The semi-final ended goalless but the Colts came the closest to scoring when Johnny hit the post and then had his rebound pushed away for a corner by the Bedworth keeper.
So the dreaded penalty shoot-out resulted with Lewis having an inspired time in goal which kept the Colts in the tie after a few Colts misses. After five spot kicks it was level and in the sudden death situation it was Blake who banished his memories of a penalty miss last year to slam the ball home for a final berth.
The final saw the Colts paired against Leamington Brakes and in the first half Johnny hit his first goal of the day and only the second for the Colts when he slotted home after creating space in a tight defence. Thereafter it was the Colts that were in control of the game but despite playing most of the game in their opponents half they couldn’t get the second goal and the Brakes almost made them pay in the final minute when Lewis made a smart save to push the ball away for a corner. In the end however it was Johnny’s goal that separated the teams and the Colts retained their trophy. Big celebrations followed after as Frankie lifted the cup and a bit of low-alcohol bubbly found its way into the trophy – happy days.

Colts to defend Brakes tournament success
Friday 8th May 2009
This Sunday the Colts visit Leamington Brakes to defend their one and only trophy success to date. Last year the Colts won an exciting final against Southam United to take the trophy back to Kenilworth and the lads will be keen to defend their achievement. On that occasion Johnny was on fire hitting 8 of the Colts 9 goals on the day with Callum adding the other.
The Colts have already tasted some tournament success this year by reaching the final of the Wardens tournament on Monday before unluckily losing on penalties to Alcester Town. Kick off is at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

Colts reach final of Wardens tournament
Monday 4th May 2009
A bitterly cold wind blew at the Wardens on Monday as the Colts took part in their first tournament of the season. Two teams were entered and the Colts started their action with two narrow 1-0 victories over Crick Colts and Leamington Hibs Colts before two goalless draws against Wellesbourne Wanderers and Alcester Town.
Meanwhile the Falcons also started with a victory against Leamington Hibs Colts with two goals from Johnny in a 2-0 victory but then a 1-1 draw against Wellesbourne Wanderers slowed them up before a narrow 1-0 defeat against Alcester Town. A goalless draw with Crick Colts set up an exciting game between the two Colts teams which would dictate which one would join Alcester Town in the final.
Brad quickly opened the scoring for the Colts, his third of the tournament before Tyler equalised in the second half as he slotted home from outside the box. A 1-1 draw kept the team arguments in check but sadly for the Falcons it was the Colts that just did enough to reach the final.
The final was a very tight affair with little between the two teams and it was no surprise that despite extra time they couldn’t be separated and the dreaded penalty kicks resulted. Kick after kick hit the back of the net but eventually it was the visitors that scored the decisive kick in a 7-6 victory. Still despite the cold wind it was a fun morning and it was good to start the tournament season with a final berth although in the end the lads just missed out on a second trophy.

All teams will play each other with the top two progressing to a play off. The Colts will have two new signings in their ranks in Mattie & Bradley and both should add to the attacking options for the two teams.

Friday 1st May 2009
As expected Woodford won their final match of the season, a comfortable 7-0 victory over Lillington Rangers which means that there is a three-way tie at the top of the table. League rules state that goal difference doesn’t apply and as such a play-off system is adopted which will be arranged by the League Committee.
