Colts visit Norton Lindsey

Friday 28th November 2008

Following last weeks victory over Banbury Irish the Colts make the short visit to Warwick based club Norton Lindsey hoping to get a result to keep the pressure on the sides above them. Old rivals Norton Lindsey have had a mixed start to the season but have had some better results of late and currently lie in 6th place with 5 points from their 6 games.

Last season in the corresponding fixture the Colts had the better of things on a wet and windy day in November winning an exciting game 7-3 which included a hat trick by Ollie. Later in the season it was a closer game at home which the Colts just managed to win 4-3. The Colts have played Norton Lindsey more times than any other time in their short history and in general the games have been fairly tight with 4 draws and 5 one goal differences in the scores with last years 7-3 victory being the only sizeable victory of note. Overall The Colts have slightly the better of things. Having met first at Under 9 age group the overall record between the two teams is 4 wins for the Colts, 3 wins for Norton Lindsey and 4 draws.

A win for the Colts could see them move up the table to 3rd place if Lillington slip up against unbeaten Woodloes. In the other games Banbury Irish entertain Crick Colts and Stretton Athletic host Southam.

Colts dodge the showers and get back to winning ways

Wednesday 26th November 2008

The Leek Wootton pitch held up very well against some very wet weather on Sunday and the Colts made full use of it as they got back to winning ways against Banbury Irish.

The Colts started brightly up the slope and took the lead after five minutes as the ball flashed across the goal not once but twice before Ollie got on the end of it from close in. However a dirty black cloud suddenly came overhead and the referee took the sensible idea to take cover from the squally shower and the lads retreated to the changing room for ten minutes much to the relief of the supporters. The break seemed to disrupt the Colts as the visitors took the initiative for the next fifteen minutes after the restart and they scored twice as they pressed hard. The Colts though were not to be outdone and regained control for the last ten minutes of the half. Frankie dribbled between a crowd of players in the box and was pushed over as the Irish lads tried to stop him. Frankie dusted himself down and drilled the ball home for the equaliser and then as the half came to a close Ollie attacked down the right and hit home on the run for a 3-2 interval lead.

After the break the Colts remained on top and started to knock the ball around well. Man of the match Ollie was causing lots of problems down the right and Frankie was also influential in the middle. As the Colts continued to press their hard toils eventually got their rewards as Johnny smashed home from close in and then he added a second as he chipped home from close in after Ollie’s shot was saved.

The win moves the Colts up the table to 4th place with a game or two in hand over the sides above them.

Irish visit Leek Wootton

Thursday 20th November 2008

Following last weeks postponement the Colts hope to get back to League action with a home match against Banbury Irish. The Colts have played the Irish four times previously and have won all of the games although three of them were close affairs. The one convincing win was the away game last year where a healthy 8-2 victory was achieved thanks in part to a brace from Johnny and a hat trick from Frankie. Earlier that season a close 2-0 victory was achieved and at the under 10’s age group a further two 2-0 victories were achieved by the Colts.

This season Banbury Irish have gained a couple of draws to their name so far and currently lie in 10th place but their last two games have shown that they are not far away from moving up the table. Last week they narrowly lost to third place Lillington Rangers 2-1 and the previous week they went out of the cup against Division 1 side Southam United Vipers only on penalties following a 3-3 draw and the Colts will no doubt have to be at their best to get a result.

Woodford take the honours as Colts falter at home

Monday 10th November 2008

Second place Woodford United came to Leek Wootton and deservedly took the points back to Northamptonshire as they ran out 3-2 winners on a blustery November afternoon.

Winning the toss the Colts decided to play with the wind to see if they could take a half time lead but the visitors were much more fired up for the game and held their defence well and certainly had their fair share of attacks up the slope. The lethargic looking Colts needed a few changes and Paul brought on Harry midway through the half and he quickly repaid the gesture as he spun his marker and drilled home the ball from the edge of the box. Woodford continued to break dangerously however and as the half came to a close they equalised when a quick break caught out the Colts at the back post for an easy tap in.

At half time there were some firm words and the Colts did improve after the break but it was Woodford who scored first with a quality strike from distance. However despite playing up the slope and against the wind the Colts were looking more dangerous than they did in the first half and they battled much better. Johnny managed to get them level with ten minutes remaining with a fine shot from the edge of the box but unfortunately soon after the Colts lost the ball midfield and a pinpoint through pass behind the Colts defence found the nippy Woodford forward and he slid it past the advancing Lewis for the winner.

The Colts huffed and puffed for an equaliser but the third Woodford goal was the last chance of note for either team and as the whistle went it was the visitors who celebrated. They knew it was an important game and came fired up and got their rewards, for the Colts Frankie took the man of the match award for a hard working and creative game in midfield and Jacob and Harry also had good games but on the whole there were too many that had an off day and hopefully they can put that behind them for next week’s return fixture.

Crucial double header for the Colts

Friday 7th November 2008

The Colts have two back to back games against second place Woodford United coming up with the first at home this weekend.

Woodford are the top scorers in the division and are sure to put up a strong challenge as the Colts try and maintain their 100% league record. Last week they completed the double over basement club Norton Lindsey winning 4-0 to add to their 10-0 drubbing they handed out to them on the opening day of the season. Overall this year Woodford have made a strong start and have only dropped points against table toppers Woodloes who beat them 6-3 and Lillington Rangers who drew with them 4-4.

In the past the games between the Colts and the Northamptonshire based club have been fairly tight but the Colts have managed to get the points on all four occasions. Two narrow victories at Under 10 level were followed with a 4-3 away victory and a more comfortable 7-2 home win at a very windy Wardens ground last season.

The winners will make ground up on leaders Woodloes Juniors as they are involved in a cup match and it will also give a motivational lift for the second game the following week.

Happy Birthday – to our web site

Tuesday 4th November 2008

Whilst everyone was celebrating Halloween last week October 31st was a memorable day for the Colts web site in that it was 1 year old.

The web site went live on 31st October 2007 and we had 29 visits that first day and over the year we have had over 8,200 unique visits who in total have viewed in excess of 40,000 pages at an average of 5 page views per visit.

Our visitors have come from far and wide although as you would expect the UK makes up the majority. In total we have had visitors from 20 countries with web hits from as far away as South Korea, Australia, South Africa and the USA with plenty of visitors from various countries in Europe.

The most popular pages have been the news desk and the gallery but all pages have been regularly viewed.

Many positive comments have been received about the web site and we know that we have many visitors from other clubs. It takes a fair amount of hard work to keep it up to date and none of it would be possible without the support of our web site host and sponsor BlueSky Interactive. Many thanks to Neil for all of his hard work with the admin and design and of course to Alan and the remainder of the team at BlueSky for their all round support. Let’s make sure that we have something memorable to put on the site this season lads.

Crick game postponed

Monday 3rd November 2008

The Colts had yet another free weekend this week as a result of Crick postponing the game as they couldn’t raise a team due to half-term holidays. Let’s hope that the lads get some games on the board soon otherwise it could be a bit of a catch up in the Spring.
