Colts visit Central Ajax in the Cup
Thursday 25th September 2008
The October fixtures have been announced by the League and the Colts start the month with an away cup fixture against Division 1 side Central Ajax. A tough draw; the Colts have never beaten the Warwick based club with a 1-1 draw at Under 9 age group being the only time that they have avoided defeat. However there’s no time like the present to buck the trend.
It’s back to League action thereafter in the month as the lads visit Southam United Dynamoes on Oct 12th followed by a home match against Stretton Athletic on Sunday 19th Oct. With half-term the following week this completes the October fixtures.

League down to 10 teams
Wednesday 17th September 2008
Some bad news from our friends at Henley Forest; unfortunately they have lost a few players and have taken the decision to withdraw from the League. Apparently they have a core squad of 8 who will continue to train and if they can secure a few more they may play the odd friendly in the hope to develop a team for next year but for this season it’s one less team in the League unfortunately. With no game next week it also means that we will also have no fixture on Sunday 28th September due to Henley’s withdrawal and thus by the end of the month we will only have one game to our record.

Colts open with match at Crick
Friday 12th September 2008
The first match of the season sees the Colts travel to Crick Colts who have joined Division 2 following their brief visit to the top division last year where despite all of their hard efforts they failed to secure a victory. However they started well last term with two draws and a close defeat in their first three games and Sunday’s encounter is likely to be a tough one for the Kenilworth lads.
The Colts have only met Crick twice before and that was at Under 9 age group where we secured two wins with a 5-2 home victory and a 4-1 success on our travels.

Hornets leave their sting
Friday 12th September 2008
The Colts played their final warm up match on Thursday evening on the Astroturf at Meadow Sports as the pitches remained in a poor state due to the wet weather. Despite the high bounce there was some good football played by both sides but it was Balsall & Berkswell who took the honours with a 3-1 victory.
The Colts started well and had a few chances with Johnny, Frankie and Blake all going close but the Hornets keeper made some good saves and a good defensive block deflected Frankie’s shot wide.
Midway through the half Balsall & Berkswell started to look more dangerous and forced a number of corners which the Colts defended well but gradually the Division 1 side were getting on top and eventually they scored two very similar goals as the Colts defence was caught short down the middle and the visitors took a two goal interval lead.
The second period was again an entertaining half and a good through ball by Connor gave Johnny an opportunity to pull one back but again the Hornets keeper kept the Colts at bay and midway through the half they made sure of victory with a third goal. However the Colts continued to play well and managed to eventually get on the score sheet when Blake passed well to Connor who once again put through a great through ball and this time Johnny hit the back of the net. Well done to James for winning the man of the match for a solid game at left back.
So on the evening Balsall & Berkswell were deserved winners but another useful warm-up by the Colts and they go into Sunday’s League opener with Crick Colts in good order following their four match warm up programme.

Wet weather holts the Colts
Monday 8th September 2008
After last Wednesday’s wintry weather it got much worse over the weekend and consequently the friendly match with Wellesbourne Wanderers Juniors was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Early season postponements due to water logging … let’s hope this is not a sign of things to come.
The Colts play their final pre-season friendly this coming Thursday away at Division 1 side Balsall & Berkswell.

Winter conditions fail to disrupt Colts
Friday 5th September 2008
The weather was decidedly wintry for the Colts third pre-season match of the season as they took on Coventry League side Leamington Hibs Colts as Castle Farm on Wednesday evening. The strong swirling wind and chilly temperature made playing conditions difficult and the longish grass further hindered the Colts passing game.
Playing with the wind in the first half the Colts had plenty of possession and some good one-touch passing created some useful chances but the opening goal failed to materialise and as the half drew towards the close it looked as though the Hibs would take a useful score line into the interval. However with five minutes remaining the pressure eventually paid off and the Colts took the lead through an unlikely source. Paul had only scored one goal in his Colts career to date (back at Under 9 level vs. Tachbrook) but as the ball came his way at the back of the box he lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. A more reliable source provide the Colts their second goal just a few minutes later as Johnny finished off a good passing move and the Colts took a two goal lead into the interval.
Surprisingly despite playing against the wind the Colts seemed to have even more possession and attacking chances in the second half as the Hibs seemed to tire. Connor, Harry and Blake all went close but it was Frankie who added a third with a shot from the edge of the area and Johnny then added a fourth following a great through pass from Paul who was having an inspired game and deservedly took the man of the match award just ahead of Callum who also had a good game mopping up at the back. As the weather deteriorated still further and the rain started to fall the Colts lost a little shape as the appeal of a goal got the better of some of the lads. The Hibs did get a goal back for their efforts near the end but it was too little too late and the Colts secured another useful victory in their pre-season preparation.

Colts start the new season on the road
Tuesday 2nd September 2008
The Colts start the new season on their travels on Sunday 14th Sept with a visit to Crick Colts who they have only played on two previous occasions winning both at the Under 9 age group, 5-2 at home and 4-1 away.
Last season Crick played in Division 1 and not surprisingly found the jump from 4th place in Division 3 (where they finished at Under 10 age group) to Division 1 too great and they struggled all season taking just 2 points for their efforts – surely not one of the best League allocations ever made! So somewhat tough on the lads from Northamptonshire and they will hope for a better run of events this year in a division where they should feel more comfortable. Other opening day fixtures of note are new boys Wellesbourne Wanderers Colts visiting Southam United Dynamoes and two possibly close contests between Woodford United and Norton Lindsey and Stretton Athletic and Woodloes Juniors with Henley Forest and Lillington Rangers making up the final fixture.
The following week the Colts don’t have a fixture as there are 11 teams in the Division this season and we are one of the first to have a free weekend.
On the final weekend of September we play our very first match at Leek Wooton when we entertain Henley Forest. Last season there were 30 goals scored in the three games between the two teams so perhaps a goal fest could be on the cards!

Town edge out Colts
Monday 1st September 2008
The Colts were invited to neighbours Kenilworth Town on Sunday and despite both teams having a few key players missing they fought out a tight and entertaining game that the hosts eventually won 2-0.
The Town started briskly and forced the Colts onto the defensive with only the occasional break away but the defence held firm and the game evened itself out. Johnny was playing a lone striker role and had a few chances and Frankie also went close with the Town keeper pulling off a fine save. However midway through the half a Town corner was only partially cleared into the midfield and a fantastic low shot from distance saw the home side take the lead with Lewis in goal standing no chance.
Despite the Colts going behind they continued to play their part in an end to end game and both sides had the occasional half chance but the impressive goal was the only one of the half.
The Colts added a second attacker after the interval and had a great chance to equalise when Johnny had just the keeper to beat but unfortunately he pushed his shot wide. There was some good support play by Connor and Clark and Dan were again having useful games at the back. The game was very tight in the second half with clear cut chances few and far between but with only three minutes remaining the Town secured the victory with a close finish after an attack down the Colts left.
So the first defeat of the season for the Colts but another useful performance with a few of the lads playing their first game of the new campaign. Frankie took the Man of the Match award for an industrious game in the midfield.

Colts find pre-season start tough, but still secure a win
Monday 1st September 2008
The Colts started their pre-season programme with a useful run-out at Evesham Division 1 side Alcester Town and despite trailing at half-time managed to secure a win with a strong second half performance.
Making his debut for the Colts was new keeper Lewis who looked more and more comfortable the longer the game went on. Also making his debut was James’s 9 year old brother Matthew who helped out as the Colts only had 10 and he performed admirably up front against some bigger lads.
The home side started the brighter and put on some early pressure before the Colts tuned the tables and attacked with pace with Ollie particularly causing the home team problems. Frankie hit a post and Connor the side netting as the Colts pushed for the opening score but midway through the half a poor clearance was met by an Alcester forward who drove the ball home from the edge of the box to give the home team the lead.
The Colts pushed hard to equalise and with ten minutes remaining another dangerous run by Ollie ended with a shot at goal and he found the back of the net for a deserved equaliser. Once again however a mistake gave the home side the advantage as the defence took too long to clear the ball and the Alcester forward made them pay with another crisp shot that gave Lewis no chance.
Into the second half both teams continued to attack and as the half progressed both sides noticeably tired as a result but it was the Colts that took their chances with Ollie grabbing his second goal of the evening in very familiar fashion to his first with a fast run from deep & shot with pace. Man of the match Clark then won the ball midway in the Alcester half and fired from distance and as the keeper tried to grab it Connor was on hand to make sure it crossed the line. Soon after the Colts secured the win when Johnny dribbled through the defence and opened his season’s account with a shot that went in off the post and the Colts then saw out the last ten minutes without too much concern.
So a useful opening performance, some things to work on but definitely some positive things to take into Sunday’s game with Kenilworth Town with good performances from James and Tyler at the back as well as man of the match Clark.
