More points slip by as Leek Wootton finish the year with a loss

11th December 2011

For the second week running Leek Wootton let points slip through their grasp when a 2-1 lead was turned around by league leaders Whitley Juniors into a 3-2 defeat.

The visitors started the match the brightest and had a number of close chances in the opening 20 minutes which culminated in an opening goal up the slope as the Whitley forward knocked home a lose ball from a corner and this was the marker for a triple substitution and formation change that turned the half around and it was Leek Wootton who took control and subsequently the lead as firstly Jakob scored from close in following a long-throw from Charlie and then Frankie superbly found the corner of the net with one of his trade mark free kicks.

Up the slope Leek Wootton continued to press in the second half and had a number of chances to add to their lead as Whitley were very much on the back foot but halfway through the half they got a lucky break as in an attack the ball was a good 18 inches over the line which should have been a throw-in to Leek Wootton but the linesman said he didn’t see it and as the cross came in it was tucked home for an equaliser.

The game was then very even with chances at both ends but as the rain came down very heavy it was the visitors who got the vital third goal when they scored close-in from a corner and Leek Wootton couldn’t claim an equaliser that arguably they deserved.

So more points dropped from a winning position and Leek Wootton may well rue these lost points come the end of the season. On the plus side there was some very good football played and a good performance from debutant Daniel who passed the ball well in midfield.

Leek Wootton let points slip away

4th December 2011

It was a frustrating game for Leek Wootton when they could only draw with Pro Santos in a game where they were by far the stronger team but for their dominance and quick passing they could not put the visitors to bed and in the end got caught out with a killer punch at the death.

Playing up the slope Leek Wootton started the brightest and within the first minute they almost opened the scoring when Ben rattled the bar with a shot following some good approach play up the left. Spurned on by this the home side continued to press and got their reward just a few minutes later when Blake tapped in from close in following some good play by Frankie & Fayez. However the visitors soon rocked Leek Wootton on their heels when on their first attack of the match they found the back of the net with a good shot from outside the box. Most of the play was in the visitors half with Fayez in particular causing them problems but once again the visitors took the initiative when they scored a similar goal from distance again from a rare foray into the Leek Wootton half. With 10 minutes of the half remaining Fayez poked the ball home for a deserved equaliser and at half time the lads were asked as to why they were only on level terms such was their dominance in the opening period where Leek Wootton passed the ball superbly well and switched play impressively, yet they gave the visitors far too much space in midfield at times and Pro Santos certainly made them pay.

Things got worse straight from kick off however as the visitors took the lead as a low shot found the back of the net but Leek Wootton quickly regained their stride and following a series of corners Fayez got an equaliser and Charlie then rather fortuitously found the back of the net as his long shot slipped through the keepers grasp. A goal to the good with 20 minutes left and the slope in their favour Leek Wootton should have made the game safe but missed a series of good chances and despite having the majority of possession they couldn’t get that two goal lead and Pro Santos made them pay in injury time when Leek Wootton dithered at the back and the visitors struck home the loose ball. With barely time to kick off the visitors celebrated a point earned for their perseverance but for Leek Wootton it felt like a defeat as it was another two points dropped in a game they should have won.

New League Fixture added to the fixture list

1st December 2011

A new league fixture has been arranged for Sunday 18th December when we shall host league leaders and unbeaten team Christ the King. This is the return fixture from our 8-1 pounding earlier in the season when despite taking the lead and more than holding our own in the first half, where we went in on level terms, the home side really turned the screw in the second period and scored seven goals helped by some of the lads finding it tough in the heat and against some very big opponents. Hopefully with the lads now better prepared for this league and what will definitely be cooler weather an improved result can be achieved.

Leek Wootton take first points from Whitley

27th November 2011

Leek Wootton visited Whitley Juniors on Sunday for their first ever meeting and the lads came away with a deserved point and it could and perhaps should have been all three.

The game was definitely a game of two halves; the strong wind made sure of that and it was Leek Wootton who had it in their favour in the first half. The lads maintained their short pass and move game and started to create chances and Jakob was unlucky not to open the scoring when his shot came back of the post. His midfield partner Frankie then hit the other post and Andy had a couple of good chances that just went wide. Whitley also had the odd attack in the first half and on one of them they also hit the woodwork but it looked as though it was going to be a goalless opening period until some good interplay by the lads on the edge of the box saw Ben lay the ball back to Callum and he struck the ball as clean as a whistle and it nestled in the bottom corner of the net. A significant goal not just for the team but also for Callum as it was his 50th for the club.

After the break the home side started strongly and pushed Leek Wootton onto the back foot but stand-in keeper Charlie was more than holding his own and the defence seemed to be coping well with what Whitley could throw at them. Most of the play was in the Leek Wootton half but the boys seemed more than comfortable defending in the difficult conditions. There was the occasional Leek Wootton attack and ironically from one of them Whitley got their best scoring chance as they broke swiftly and as their winger squared the ball to their centre forward with the goal at his mercy he shot wide when really he should have scored.

As the match was nearing its close and Leek Wootton having luckily survived the one clear cut chance that Whitley had created were getting confident of taking the points, the home team did manage to score but it came somewhat out of the blue as one of their players punted a lose ball forward from the halfway line and it got carried along in the wind and over Charlie’s head in goal. Somewhat speculative but it did the trick and the scores were level with ten minutes remaining.

The closing period was a bit end to end with half chances at both ends as both teams went for the win but in the end both had to satisfy themselves with a draw; the first points taken this season from Whitley so the boys can feel proud of that but on another day they could have sneaked all three.

Well done to Callum who notched his 50th goal for the club on Sunday against Whitley Juniors. Wardens game rearranged for 20th November

08th November 2011

The League Cup round 2 match with near neighbours and ex colleagues Kenilworth Wardens has been rearranged for Sunday 20th November. This will be the first time that the two clubs have met since their only ever meeting, an under 9’s cup match which the Wardens ran out winners 4-0. Of course the two teams started together as a development squad but have gone separate ways since competitive matches started and since 2009 we have of course been playing as Leek Wootton.

Since leaving the Mid Warwickshire league the Wardens have had a reasonably successful time in the Coventry league winning Division 2 in their first season and retaining their Division 1 status ever since although this season the Wardens have found life in Division 1 a little tough with just 4 points from their first 6 matches. Along the way they have also been quite successful in the Cup competition and have reached the final at under 13’s age group when they lost out to St Nicholas.

Andy’s 10th hattrick breaks club record

30th October 2011

Well done to Andy who broke the club record of hattricks scored when he hit his tenth in Sunday’s game with PSA Peugeot Citroen Colts. Previously he had jointly held the record with Johnny who hit nine in his two seasons at the club. Andy will be the first to recognise the contributions of his team mates in achieving this record but nonetheless a terrific performance from Andy – well done and keep the goals coming.

Of his closest rivals Blake (five) and Frankie (four) are somewhat behind him so perhaps the record will stay for some time – unless of course Andy extends it!

Leek Wootton notch first home win of the season

30th October 2011

Leek Wootton deservedly took the points in their first ever encounter with PSA Peugeot Colts with a 5-2 victory but they had to work hard at times and the home goal did have a few scares during the game.

Playing with the slope Leek Wootton looked the more likely to open the scoring and they managed to do so after 20 minutes when a long throw by Charlie found Andy who swivelled and smashed the ball home. The visitors then had a few chances with a few long balls that caused the Leek Wootton defence some problems but Paul who was having an excellent game tidied up well at the back. Ironically it was from one of these long ball attacks that Leek Wootton broke and scored their second. Kris, who was having a fine game himself, covered the back line well, won the ball and released Frankie who in turn found Andy and within seconds defence was turned into attack and the visitors net rippled as a result. Frankie then went close but his shot was well blocked but his fancy footwork provided him some more chances and he fired home the third goal just before half time following some good interplay.

With a three goal advantage and the slope to defend Leek Wootton made some tactical changes at the break and went a little more defensive and they soaked up some pressure from the visitors as a result. PSA Peugeot did manage to get on the score sheet half way through the half and it looked as though a fight back might be on the cards but Andy and Frankie had other ideas and two quick scores from them put the result beyond doubt. Firstly Andy turned on the edge of the box and fired home into the top corner for his hat trick and then Frankie broke free of the backline and as the keeper advanced he calmly slotted it past him for his second of the match. The visitors did score again as they fired home a lose ball from a corner but it was too little too late and Leek Wootton deservedly ran out the victors.

Frankie hits 150th club goal

30th October 2011

Last game it was Andy who got the researchers taking note for moving into second place in the all-time scorers list and this week it was Frankie who hit the headlines as his second goal on Sunday was his 150th goal for the club. His first came in the teams third ever game, a 1-1 draw with Central Ajax back at under 9’s and ever since he has consistently hit the back of the net scoring over 20 goals a season every season and 150 goals is an impressive performance – well done Frankie.

Andy moves to second in the all-time top-scorers

25th October 2011

Well done to Andy who reached the lofty heights of second in the all-time club goal scorers as he hit his 68th club goal an impressive performance for a player who has only been at the club for just over a season. Andy was helped on his way by a large number of hat tricks and on two occasions he has hit7 goals in a match. So far this season he has notched 7 and is out in front in the season goal scoring chart.

St Nicholas just too strong for a brave Leek Wootton

16th October 2011

Leek Wootton made their debut in the Bedworth Nursing Cup and were greeted with the toughest of opening games when they were drawn at home to Division 1 Champions & Cup winners for the last two seasons Nuneaton based St Nicholas FC. What’s more they are also the holders of the Nursing Cup for the last two seasons.

Undaunted the lads put in a good shift and at half-time and still goalless the visitors knew that they were in for a tight game. It’s true they passed the ball around well but the lads harried and pressed and gave them little time on the ball but unfortunately a lapse in concentration let them in for an opening goal midway through the half as a free header found the back of the net. However unperturbed the lads attacked again and James managed to bundle the ball home for an equaliser and the game remained anyone’s until 8 minutes from time when St Nicholas scored a second. In an attempt to get back in the game Leek Wootton changed formation and added another striker but unfortunately the only goals to come were two injury time strikes to give the visitors a somewhat flattering 4-1 victory. Although they deserved the win Leek Wootton can be pleased about their game and a little disappointed to lose by three goals but a solid performance – well done.

Leek Wootton come back twice to get a draw

8th October 2011

Leek Wootton entertained Fayez’s old team Brinklow for their first ever encounter other than the odd tournament game and it was an entertaining game but disappointingly for Leek Wootton it was more dropped points in a game they should have won. The visitors took the lead midway through the half when a poor kick out was picked up by their forward who smashed it home into an empty Leek Wootton net but Andy turned and fired home from the edge of the box for the equaliser but a second goal (again not a great goal defensively to give away) just before half time gave the visitors an interval lead.

After the break it was virtually one-way traffic as Leek Wootton camped in Brinklow’s half and they managed to equalise for the second time mid way through with a header from Andy but try as they may they couldn’t get their noses in front and the game ended 2-1. Another point for the lads but they will be disappointed they never took all three.
