Thats All Folks
12th July 2010
The season was wrapped up on Sunday when Leek Wootton waved goodbye to the under 13’s with two teams in the Bulkington tournament in Bedworth. Two mixed teams, the Yellow’s & Whites had diverse tournaments with the Yellows starting strongly before fading away and the Whites the opposite, starting poorly but then finishing strongly.
The Yellows opened with a good 2-0 victory over Coventry side Alvis with Dan getting a brace but that was to be their only victory of the morning although they picked up an impressive draw against a strong Chappelfield Colts team but a few defeats resulted in a group stage exit despite the team playing some good passing football at times.
The Whites started with a defeat, a rather unlucky 1-0 reverse against a very strong Weddington Thistle but there was enough in the first game to suggest that the team could do well in the tournament but unfortunately they couldn’t score and three goalless draws followed. Four games played and no goals scored is hardly tournament winning form but then again there were very few goals scored in this group and with the exception of Weddington everyone else was drawing and with one game left the Whites could still qualify if they won their last game and that they duly did as they brushed aside Pro Santos 2-0 with a brace from Frankie.
So despite only winning one game and only scoring two goals the team crawled into the semi-final where they met local rivals Kenilworth Town. The Whites had steadily improved throughout the tournament and this was to be their best performance as they pushed Kenilworth hard with most of the play in the Town half. However midway through the match Town broke away and managed to score on the break-away and despite Leek Wootton continuing to attack they couldn’t equalise and went out once again at the semi-final stage. James came the closest to equalising as his header was saved on the line by the Town keeper who then crashed into the post with his body behind the line, the Whites thought the ball had crossed the line and turned away in celebration but the referee thought otherwise and the Town held on for the victory and then went on to win the final.
So an eventful morning at Bulkington to close the season; a well organised tournament with a strong line-up and Leek Wootton put in two good performances with the new players blending in well, the future looks bright. Good individual performances on the day were provided by Dan, Paul & Jack in the Yellows and Frankie, Matt & Jacob in the Whites and special praise to Blake who put in a good performance in goal for the Whites.
Its feet up now for a few weeks; well done to everyone who has played this season and thanks to everyone who has helped out, a long but good season and the club can look forward to next season.

Leek Wootton unluckily miss out on semi-final penalties - AGAIN
5th July 2010
Once again the curse of the penalty shoot-out raised its ugly head as the lads went out of the Badsey Rangers tournament at the semi-final stage. This was unfortunate as the team had played well on the day and had won their group with victories over Bretforton and home club Badsey Rangers together with a useful draw with Alcester Town. The semi-final saw them have the majority of the chances in a goalless game with Bredon Colts but they couldn’t get that elusive goal that their hard efforts deserved and it was to prove fatal as the lads missed out again on penalties. Overall though the boys performed very well and a number of referees said that they were very impressed with the quality of the football that Leek Wootton played, however in tournaments its all about winning and when it came down to the crucial spot-kicks the boys just didn’t have it.
The Badsey Rangers tournament held in the village of Badsey near Evesham was a new one for Leek Wootton and it was a very nice and friendly event played on some good pitches and against some new teams for the club. It’s certainly one we hope to re-visit again next season.

Leek Wootton just edged out in Alcester tournament
19th May 2010
Leek Wootton had a mixed bag of results in the Alcester tournament and just missed out on a semi-final berth by just one point. Two strong teams from Peopleton and Drakes Broughton from the Evesham and West Mercia leagues respectively provided stern tests but Leek Wootton beat Drakes Broughton 1-0 to open up a way forward with just two of the weaker teams to play. Two wins would have seen them qualify but unfortunately they lost to home club Alcester Town – their only win of the day – and this was to cost them dear. Drakes Broughton on the other hand went on to win the final and thus Leek Wootton was the only team to beat them on the day.

Under par Leek Wootton go out of Brinklow in the group stages
7th June 2010
It wasn’t the best tournament performance by Leek Wootton on Sunday as they went out in the group stages of the Brinklow tournament with just a solitary victory to their name. The boys were definitely asleep in the first game against eventual group winners Hillmorton and by the time they wok up it was too late and they ended up on the back of a 4-1 defeat, a result that equals their worst ever tournament result. Things improved in the second game against eventual winners Cov Jag and the boys had the better of the game but the Jag snatched it at the end with a 1-0 win. The lads exit was confirmed in their next game as they let a two goal lead slip to eventually lose 3-2 to Rugby Town and only in the last game did they grasp some pride with a 2-1 win over host club Brinklow. Frankie led the way on the goal front with four with Dan hitting the other but after reaching the final here last year the lads never looked like repeating last years performance. On a positive note to finish well done to Matt for a good debut performance.

Unlucky Leek Wootton go out of Southam tournament on penalties
25th May 2010
Two Leek Wootton teams entered the Southam tournament on a warm Friday evening and one of the teams made it through to the semi final before going out on penalties to eventual winners Cov Jag. It was unfortunate as Leek Wootton were definitely the better side but they couldn’t get the ball past Jack in the Cov Jag goal and in the end the dreaded penalties sealed their fate. Previous to this the lads competed in a round robin event with games against every team and there were quite a few wins along the way as well as the odd defeat with our two teams finishing 2nd and 5th in the 8 group event. On the goal front Frankie hit four and Dan two and there were also scores on the night from Paul, Andy C and an own goal.

Late goals sink Leek Wootton
Tuesday 20th April, 2010
Leek Wootton played in their very first cup final on Sunday when they played holders Balsall & Berkswell in the Supplementary cup and went down 3-0 but the game was a much closer affair than the score line suggests with two late goals taking the game away from Leek Wootton who put in a spirited display and on another day they could have sneaked it.
Although there were chances at both ends it was the Hornets who probably had the better of the opening exchanges but the score remained goalless until 20 minutes when Balsall opened the scoring from a corner. Leek Wootton cheered on by a large crowd then had their best period of the match and pushed hard for an equaliser with Dan coming closest when his strong low shot on the run was superbly saved by the diving Hornets keeper to push it round the post. Jakob & Frankie were creating some good opportunities for Dan up front but despite being the better team for the second period of the opening half Leek Wootton couldn’t get on level terms and went into the half time chat a goal behind.
A formation change added more firepower up front but the upper hand that Leek Wootton had at the end of the first half seemed to ebb away as the game became a tight affair, however with 15 minutes remaining Leek Wootton came closest to scoring when Callum’s shot hit the bar. A short corner move then saw Frankie break clear of the full back but unfortunately there was no one at the far post to nod home a great cross. As the game moved into the final ten minutes the game then took a decisive turn as a Balsall forward harassed one of the Leek Wootton defenders and won the ball and with a straight run at goal he finished well to take a decisive two goal lead. It was tough for Leek Wootton who had battled hard and you could see the despondency on some of the faces and in the last two minutes Balsall & Berkswell wrapped up the win with a fine free kick that hit the bottom corner for a 3-0 victory.
Despite a good performance from Leek Wootton Balsall & Berkswell had a little more quality in the attacking third and deserved their victory although the 3-0 score line was a tough one for Leek Wootton to take. There were some very good performances from Dan, Frankie, Andy & Kris but alas it wasn’t enough. Congratulations to Balsall & Berkswell and for Leek Wootton it was a near miss and one to build on in the future.![]()
Leek Wootton get ready for the Cup Final
Tuesday 16th April, 2010
This Sunday Leek Wootton play in their very first cup final when they take on fellow Division 1 side Balsall & Berkswell at Central Ajax with a 2:00 p.m. kick off. Both sides played this week with the Hornets getting a good point against Tazmanian Cruiser Colts and Leek Wootton unluckily going down to Southam Utd.
To get to the final Balsall & Berkswell have had victories over Cubbington Albion, Bilton Ajax and Tazmanian Cruiser Colts and they are sure to be tough opponents for Leek Wootton. The first game of the season the Hornets inflicted a hefty 5-1 beating over Leek Wootton but the lads have learnt a lot since then and Sunday’s game is expected to be a very close affair. Paul & Phil have prepared the team well for the final to give them their best chance of success and with a big crowd cheering on the lads who knows we could just about bring the cup home with us.

“Old Boy” Johnny sneaks the points for Southam
Tuesday 16th April, 2010
On Wednesday evening Leek Wootton welcomed Southam Utd who included ex team mate Johnny in their ranks and it was him who was to have the final word on a pulsating match that could have gone either way.
The visitors started the brightest and had three good chances in the first five minutes but failed to take any of them and after that offered little in the way of threatening action in the first period. After their slow start Leek Wootton came into the game and Frankie & Jakob came close to opening the scoring but in reality the first half was a very tight affair with neither keeper having too much in the way of real goalmouth action.
The deadlock was broken just two minutes after the interval when Southam attacked down the Leek Wootton left and as the cross came in it was blocked by Jacob but Johnny was quickest to pounce on the lose ball and he scored a typical poachers goal. This seemed to spur Leek Wootton on and they had their best period of the match and Dan and Callum were causing the visitors defence plenty of problems but it was Frankie who went closest to equalising when he broke free of the defence and drove towards the top corner before the Southam keeper made a fantastic fingertip save to push it away for a corner. Leek Wootton were on top during this period and with ten minutes remaining deservedly got an equaliser when Andy played the ball into Jakob who in turn fed Dan who broke free of the defence and coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper.
Unfortunately keeper Jack got injured at this point and had to be replaced by Tyler which obviously left the team more vulnerable at the back but it was Leek Wootton who were doing most of the pressing at this stage of the match. This was all to change with 2 minutes left however as Johnny who was closely marked throughout the game by Jacob for once managed to break free and with a small area of freedom he drove the ball home for a quality finish. This was tough to take for Leek Wootton having worked hard to get back level and Southam rubbed the “salt in” with the final touch of the match as they scored from a corner to make the final score 3-1 to the visitors before the referee blew for the end of a great game that could have gone either way.
Despite the result the lads can be proud of their display; Southam are well organised side with some quality players and they were more than matched by Leek Wootton throughout and perhaps Johnny’s finishing skills was the difference between the players on the day but with just 2 minutes remaining the lads were very much in the game and this was very good preparation for the forthcoming cup final.

Ajax far too strong for Leek Wootton
Tuesday 12th April, 2010
With the season nearing its end a game against a quality side like Central Ajax is not quite what the Doctor ordered but the lads battled hard and played some good football at times but they could not stop the Warwick based club knocking in 4 goals in each half with only a great strike from Frankie in response. Despite the score there were some good performances from Leek Wootton including Dan, Frankie, Paul and man of the match Andy but in the end the opposition were just too strong on the day and they inflicted our biggest defeat of the season.
We are not alone in being on the receiving end of a big beating from Ajax’s good pass & move game; they are the top goal scorers in the league by quite some margin and the only surprise is that they are unlikely to win the league, very surprising in fact as they are certainly the best side we have played.

Inter Club Quiz night a big success
Thursday 1st April, 2010
Leek Wootton opened their doors to a number of local teams on April 1st to find out who are the brain boxes of local football and who was the April fool’s!
Seven teams took part in the fun event which was a series of quiz and skill rounds and congratulations to Wellesbourne who won the event with the last throw of the ping pong ball in the final round when a score of 10 being achieved to secure the top spot by a mere 6 points from Leek Wootton. We hope all of our guests enjoyed the evening and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2011.

Leek Wootton go down without too much fuss
Thursday 1st April, 2010
Leek Wootton travelled the short distance to local rivals Kenilworth Town but came away with nothing and there weren’t too many complaints as the lads didn’t really raise their game and it was all a little too easy for the hosts. Leek Wootton defended reasonably well in the first half and looked like going into the interval on level terms but Town scored from a corner as they smashed home the lose ball. They then added a second almost immediately after the break, again from a corner and after that the lads seemed to lose what fight they had and the Town ran in easy 3-0 winners with Leek Wootton offering little in attack. Frankie took the man of the match award for his hard efforts in the middle of the park and there were good contributions from Paul and Callum but many of the other lads had a quiet game and it was one to quickly forget.

Bad luck continues as Leek Wootton go down at Taz
Saturday 21th March, 2010
The boys made their first ever visit to the Leamington home of Tazmanian Cruisers and they put in a good performance but alas it didn’t provide any points and yet again they had some bad luck in the process. In the first half when they were well on top they hit the woodwork twice with the ball rebounding to safety. Once when Frankie played a ball inside the full back for Matt to run on and slip it past the advancing keeper only to see his shot come back off the post and then Frankie set up midfield partner Jakob whose powerful shot rattled the crossbar. There were other chances but unfortunately the boys couldn’t convert any of them and in the end the home side made them pay.
The big fast forward for Taz was causing some problems and the opening goal stemmed from him as he attacked down the left and his pull back was met at the far post for an easy tap in. Just a few minutes later it was 2-0 as the same player cut through the defence and Jack had no chance from close in and at half time the boys were behind in a game in which they had the majority of the attacking play.
The lads pushed hard to get back in the game after the break and again they had lots of possession with Matt looking dangerous on the left but it was Blake in the centre who managed to get Leek Wootton back in the game when his shot from the edge of the box found the back of the net. Leek Wootton continued to push hard for an equaliser but the home side were also looking at their most dangerous now and there were chances at both ends however the result was settled when a really unlucky own goal gave Taz a 3-1 lead. The ball was played into the box and as Tyler powerfully cleared the ball it struck Jacob on the back of the head and ricocheted into the goal. For all their hard work it was tough one to take but still the lads searched for another score and Matt went close at the far post with his shot being smothered by the keeper.
So once again some good approach play but not the cutting edge in front of goal and once again it cost the boys dearly, but a good performance which was recognised by the Taz manager after the game who thought that the score was somewhat harsh on the lads and that we deserved something from the game. Matt took the man of the match award but there were other good performances from Frankie, Jakob, Dan & Blake and a special mention for Jack who was very ill but played most of the game in goal, finally coming off near the end with shear exhaustion before rushing home to bed.

Bare Bones of a team grind out a creditable draw
Saturday 14th March, 2010
Leek Wootton had the bare eleven when they visited fourth placed Hillmorton on Sunday and came away with a creditable point as they fought tooth and nail to defend their goal in a fairly good game despite the swirling wind that made it difficult for all of the players. Even some of the eleven were carrying injuries and with a few more knocks and bruises during the game it was indeed a great and brave display.
Defending the wind in the first half the lads coped well with what high scoring Hillmorton could throw at them and in attack Dan was causing the home defence to work hard however neither side really made the goalkeeper “work for his money” in the first period with Hillmorton coming closest with a couple of shots that were off target.
After the break the home side exerted some pressure and Jack had to make a few smart saves to keep the boys in it and with 15 minutes remaining it was still goalless but then Jack could only parry a strong good shot from the Hillmorton forward and his strike partner was on hand to knock home the rebound. Having waited an hour for the first goal a second came just moment later as Frankie broke free and as the keeper came out he lobbed him and just to make sure the ball went in Dan chased in the lose ball and the back of the net was bulging with a Leek Wootton equaliser. In these circumstances both players normally claim the goal but surprisingly after the game both claimed it was the other who scored – take your pick.
Both sides then had further half chances in what seemed like an extraordinary long period of injury time – this was “Fergie time” on “Fergie time”, but in the end the referee blew his whistle and the boys took home a very well deserved point in a tight match that was played in a very good spirit which was a relief after last week fiasco. There were good performances throughout the team with Blake, Andy, James & Paul in particular playing well but the man of the match award went to Jack for pulling of a couple of key saves early in the second half, even better knowing that he was playing with an injury.

Some things are best kept quiet...
Saturday 7th March, 2010
A more ironic headline would be difficult to find to describe a sad day for football when Leek Wootton entertained Fenny Compton in a tight game that for the record finished in a 2-1 victory for the visitors. However the game was ruined by some totally unnecessary behaviour which arguably denied Leek Wootton a fair chance to get something from the match. We won’t go into details here, as said some things are best kept quiet but win or lose we pride ourselves in playing the game in a fair and sportsmanlike fashion.
Two goals down at the break Frankie pulled one back early in the second half with a smart free kick from the edge of the box and Dan almost got an equaliser when his strong shot rebounded of the post just before a prolonged interruption to the game. There were good performances throughout the team with Jakob taking the man of the match award however all the good work put in by the majority of the players will be soon forgotten in lieu of some more unsavoury memories.

Town take the points in a tight derby
Saturday 28th February, 2010
Local neighbours Kenilworth Town came to Leek Wootton and departed with the points after an absorbing match that had a little bit of controversy.
Still goalless on the hour Frankie broke free of the defence and as the Town keeper closed him down Frankie knocked the ball to his side and with the goal at his mercy he was then taken out (albeit with no malice, but taken out nonetheless), with the resultant free kick just outside the area. As the free kicked cleared the bar Leek Wootton wondered what might have been. However when you are at the bottom scrapping for points the rub of the green doesn’t seem to go your way and just a minute later it got worse for the home side as a Town shot which was going wide struck a defender and ricocheted into the net with Jack wrong footed.
Up to that point both teams had had plenty of chances with the Town coming closest when they struck the post but Leek Wootton also caused the title chasers some problems particularly Dan who was a constant irritant to the Town defence and both keepers had a busy day.
A goal to the good Town then pushed hard to kill the game off and Jack pulled off a wonder save to keep Leek Wootton in it but as the match neared its conclusion Town scored a second from close range only for Leek Wootton to push hard again in the last five minutes and they got their reward for a hard days effort when Frankie won the ball on the flank and played it into Dan who found the corner of the net. In the end it was just a consolation goal but the lads played well and second placed Town certainly knew they had had a scrap.
There were good games throughout the team; Jack had a fine game in goal and there were good performances from Paul & James at the back and Tyler in midfield but it was Frankie who was awarded the man of the match for a fine game in the centre of the pitch where he seemed to de-clutter the frantic activities with an element of composure.

2010 Tour plans announced
Wednesday 25th February, 2010
Leek Wootton will once again be off on tour this year, slightly later than normal as they visit the Devon Cliffs holiday park near Exmouth in South Devon on the weekend 25th – 27th June.
The holiday park has a great indoor & outdoor pool complex, a very good pitch & putt golf course plus plenty of other fun attractions. The resort also has its own private beach and if the lads can get away from all of the attractions we might also have the odd bit of football thrown in as well. Thanks to the fundraising efforts the cost has once again been subsidised at £55 per person so book your place now lads, oh and by the way there is apparently a bar or two for the Dad’s to frequent for the odd soft drink!

Leek Wootton reach their very first final
Tuesday 9th February, 2010
It’s taken a few years but in their fifth season Leek Wootton have finally made it to a cup final. On Sunday they earned a final berth of the Supplementary Cup following a hard earned victory over Leamington based club Tazmanian Cruiser Juniors.
This was the first time that these two teams had ever met and Leek Wootton started the brighter pushing the visitors onto the back foot but they were unable to take advantage of their possession as Taz defended well. However they didn’t offer too much in attack in the opening exchanges and hence a tactical switch was made mid-way through the half with a defender switching for an extra attacker and it did the trick as substitute Harry created space and passed the ball to Dan who ran in on goal and smashed it into the top corner. With the slope in their favour Leek Wootton continued to push but all too often the final ball wasn’t good enough and their approach play looked a little hurried and the visitors comfortably held firm for the rest of the half.
A half-time talk focussed on adding a bit more quality and another tactical switch seemed to do the trick as it was a much better performance in the second half and despite playing up the slope Leek Wootton created not only more but better quality opportunities but alas once again their finishing let them down and midway through the half there was still just the one goal in it. Taz kept battling hard especially in midfield but the Leek Wootton defence seemed in control of their attacks and midway through the half the home side got some breathing space when Dan added his second of the game when he found the top corner from the edge of the box.
With time running out Taz had one last attack and from it got on the score sheet as Jack, who had little to do in the match, was beaten with a low shot in injury time. A nervous last few moments perhaps but unfortunately for Taz there was barely time to launch another attack as the referee quickly blew his whistle and Leek Wootton celebrated their success. The visitors, although obviously disappointed can be pleased with their performance, they closed Leek Wootton down quickly causing them to rush their passes and they broke up play well. For the home side it was time to celebrate, Matt took the man of the match award for his quality forays down the left and there were other good performances from Callum and Andy amongst others.

The boys get back in action but drop short of league leaders...
Tuesday 26th January, 2010
After six weeks away from the pitch the lads finally got back to kicking a football when they entertained league leaders Wellesbourne Wanderers in an entertaining match where Leek Wootton started strongly before fading away in the second half as they tired against the crisp passing visitors.
Despite playing uphill Leek Wootton started brightly and had the best of the opening exchanges and midway through the half Brad accelerated down the left, beat three players and as he looked set to let fly with just the keeper to beat he was tripped for a clear penalty. Up stepped Frankie and he smashed the ball home for an early lead. This seemed to wake the league leaders up a little and they started to press as the half continued although in the main the home side were coping well with what they threw at them restricting Wellesbourne to long shots which although a high proportion were on target Jack was easily coping with them. However with ten minutes remaining a corner was driven across and the incoming forward smashed it home for the equaliser. As the half drifted to a close Wellesbourne had a free kick which was superbly stuck into the back of the net for an interval lead and the lads were a little disappointed to be behind at half time as they had more than held their own against the league leaders.
Playing with the slope Leek Wootton were hoping to get back in the match but it was Wellesbourne who took control in the second half. They had greater strength in depth and as the subs were introduced they passed the ball around well and stretched the Leek Wootton midfield and defence tiring them in the process. Ten minutes in and a lapse of concentration meant that the defence lost a bit of shape and Wellesbourne pounced to take the game beyond Leek Wootton and after that the home side offered little in attack as they visibly tired chasing the game. However they kept battling and despite a fourth goal near the end they put in a spirited performance with Kris getting man of the match for a strong game at full back.
So the New Year starts with a defeat but in the first half the lads more than matched their lofty opponents and they should build on this as the season progresses. Wellesbourne deserved their victory and were much improved from the away fixture earlier in the season but there were some positives to take for Leek Wootton as well.

New Year Freeze continues...
Friday 8th January, 2010
With all the festive fun now behind us the lads were hoping for a bit of football to brush away the cobwebs but the arctic conditions have put paid to that. First to go was last Sunday’s friendly with Coventry Jaguar, and then this week’s training and now Sunday’s return to league action with Fenny Compton have all been cancelled. With the conditions expected to continue into next week even next weeks game with Southam must be in some doubt. Still this Sunday there will be some football action as the club have challenged local neighbours Kenilworth Town in an indoor 6-a side session with two teams being provided by each team in a round robin bit of fun.
Fingers crossed that the weather will improve soon if not we could have some busy evenings in April. Oh and by the way “Happy New Year” to all of our readers.

Ho Ho Ho Santa’s been...
Tuesday 15th December, 2009
After the Woodford match the lads returned in the evening to the club for a great fun filled evening of games in the club house which was won in the end by the team called “The Soggy Biscuits” (not sure why) consisting of Blake, Dan, Kris and Matt’s little brother Josh. Expert on the Bulls eye game thanks to Dan’s skills with the arrows but not so accurate on the ping pong ball round. However in the final round the lads held their nerves on the skittles and managed to beat their nearest rivals “The Cov lads” with a ball to spare. The “Willey’s” (we dare not ask) came third with “Up your Viva” (totally confused on that one) just a point behind. The Guess the baby round went down very well although some of the lads failed to recognise themselves!
As the prizes were presented there was a knock at the door and Santa had just popped by to leave this years presents, a new kit back, away kit and a few chocolates and after-match smellies. Happy Christmas everyone and see you all in the New Year!

Leek Wootton finish the year with a win
Tuesday 15th December, 2009
The most successful year in the team’s history came to a close with a victory against the team that we had battled with earlier in the year, Woodford Utd, only this time it was a convincing 7-1 thumping. Jakob opened the scoring finishing well from the edge of the box and Frankie dribbled his way from the corner of the box before smashing in the second and midway through the half Brad connected with a cross from Frankie to make the half time score 3-0. After the break the home side pushed hard in the opening few minutes and their tails were up when they scored direct from a corner but a quick riposte from Dan as he stretched and toe poked the ball past the advancing keeper for a 4-1 lead calmed the nerves and three more goals from Brad in the second half made the final score a convincing one. This was a good passing performance from Leek Wootton played on a sticky pitch with good performances throughout but Frankie just got ahead of his midfield partner Jakob to claim the man of the match award.

Santa’s on his way
Friday 4th December, 2009
This year’s Christmas party will take place at the Leek Wootton club on Sunday 13th Dec starting at 6:00 p.m. A fun filled evening has been arranged for the lads (no details yet but all will be revealed on the night) with a fish ‘n chip supper during the interval and just to cap it off someone from up North is visiting at the end – honest lad’s he’s real, he really does exist and he wants to come and say Happy Christmas. What would be the best Christmas present however would be another three points from our game earlier in the afternoon at Woodford – hint, hint lads!

Leek Wootton grind out second league win
Sunday 29th November, 2009
Leek Wootton secured their second league win of the season when they ground out a 3-2 victory over a battling Woodford United in a game that swung one way and then the other before the decisive last ten minutes settled the result.
Leek Wootton played their best football in the first half and created a string of good chances playing up the slope but their only return for their creative efforts was a goal from Dan who finished well following some good work on the right by Brad. It looked like being the only goal of the half but then some loose defending let Woodford in just before the break with the ball just trickling in the far post.
After the break the home side appeared to go a little flat dropping off their industrious work rate and halfway through the half they paid the penalty when they conceded to a fine long range strike. However the lads bucked up their ideas and with ten minutes remaining Frankie cleverly slotted the ball through for Blake to nip it past the Woodford keeper for the equaliser and then with just five minutes remaining Frankie again was the provider as his through ball found the advancing Brad who scored the winning goal to cap a man of the match performance!

Ajax hit Leek Wootton for six
Sunday 22nd November, 2009
Leek Wootton travelled the short distance to Warwick for a tough match with a strong and big Central Ajax side that pushed Leek Wootton onto the back foot from the opening whistle and didn’t really let the pressure off until the final whistle however the lads defended well for the opening period and after 50 minutes it was only 1-0 to the home side but under the constant pressure a few defensive errors were made and gradually the home side hit the net with regular occurrence with Leek Wootton offering little in attack. Jack made a series of fine saves and deserved the man of the match award but it was game best forgotten on the whole. On the bright side we didn’t do as bad as Wigan!

Leek Wootton lose battle of strength
Sunday 15th November, 2009
Leek Wootton took the lead against Tazmanian Cruiser Colts and held firm for three quarters of the match before a strong second half performance from the visitors saw them come from behind to take the points.
Playing up the slope Leek Wootton dealt with the Taz attacks fairly well in the first half with Jack having to make one good save but apart from that they looked fairly good value for their lead given to them by Dan who unleashed an unstoppable shot from the right hand side and they went into the interval a goal to the good. After the break however the visitors changed their formation a little and certainly upped their game and looked stronger than Leek Wootton often getting to the lose ball first causing the home side to rush passes and rely uncharacteristically on the long ball. The visitors took control of the midfield and with 15 minutes remaining forced a corner from which they scored and the game was finely balanced but with ten minutes remaining the visitors added to their lead again from a corner and in the closing minutes were awarded a penalty for a push and they wrapped up the spoils 3-1.
As a result of their second half performance Leek Wootton can have few complaints about the result, the visitors looked strong and quick and they forced Leek Wootton on to the back foot with too many of the lads having an off game as a result. Dan, Jacob, Paul and Andy were probably the pick of the bunch with Andy getting the man of the match award for a strong performance at right back.

Dan, Dan the hat trick man
Sunday 8th November, 2009
Dan added his name to the list of Leek Wootton players who has scored a hat trick when he scored three against a battling Southam United in the Supplementary Cup Round 1. He wasn’t the only one to score as Leek Wootton rattled in nine goals without reply for their biggest victory for over a season.
Playing up the slope in the first half Leek Wootton had the vast majority of possession and had a number of chances playing some good football but only had Dan’s opening goal and a season’s first by Blake to show for their efforts but after the break as they played three at the back adding the extra forward they really made the most of their possession as they hit a further seven. Dan added two more for his hat trick, Kris had two great strikes from the angle for his first goals of the season and there were other goals from Callum, Harry and birthday boy Jack who had his first ever foray for the team on the pitch and the keeper looked a handy forward and could have had a couple more himself.
A good performance from Leek Wootton with all players playing well; Jakob was very impressive in midfield but James took the man of the match award for a strong performance at the back.
This was only the second ever cup victory for Leek Wootton and hopefully the lads can build on it in the league next week when they have a crucial game with Taz Cruisers.

November Fixtures released
Sunday 1st November, 2009
The fixtures for November have been released and they see Leek Wootton open up with a home Supplementary Cup match against Southam United Dynamoes from Division 2. Southam were put out of the League Cup by Woodford United and have so far failed to register a point in the league but will no doubt be looking to open their account against the lads next week.
It’s then back to League action with three matches starting with a home match with Tazmanian Cruiser Colts which will be the first time that the two teams have ever played each other and then an away match against Central Ajax who Leek Wootton have yet to register a victory despite some close matches in the past. The month closes with another home match, this time against Woodford United, the team who joined us in Division 1 following last years promotion.

Leek Wootton secure their first top-flight win
Sunday 18th October, 2009
It was a deserved three points for Leek Wootton when they visited Southam United on Sunday and they ran out worthy 2-0 victors in a game in which they gradually took control as the game progressed. The defence put in a very strong performance and limited the Southam attack to a few scraps of possession with Jack in goal only really having one shot to save the whole match. Jacob did particularly well in his man marking role and their attack was well and truly blunted by his efforts. In attack Dan was causing mischief but the Southam defence were also having a good game and clear cut first half chances were at a premium at both ends.
After the break Leek Wootton went more on the attack and their passing football started to stretch the home defence but the game remained goalless for an hour until Dan had another charging run and he was pulled down just outside the box. Up stepped Frankie and he cleared the wall and found the back of the net for a quality opening goal. The goal caused Southam to come out more as they chased the game and this left further space for Leek Wootton to exploit and with five minutes remaining Dan fed Callum and he beat the advancing keeper to secure the points.
It was a good team effort by Leek Wootton; all of the players played well but Tyler, Frankie, Jacob, Blake and Dan particularly played well but Jack took the man of the match award for a commanding performance between the sticks. Although he had little to do in the way of goal minding he read the game well and cut out many of the crosses and scraps and gave the defence plenty of confidence to play their game to the full.
So after last weeks opening point it’s a first win for the lads in Division 1 and the improvement from the opening two games gives rise for optimism in this tough and equally competitive division.

We’re on the board …
Sunday 11th October, 2009
After a tough baptism to the top flight Leek Wootton are now on the board with their first ever Division 1 point gained in a hard fought 2-2 draw at Fenny Compton in an entertaining and competitive match that had a double twist at the end.
Both teams went on the attack early on but the defences held firm until mid way through the first half when a Fenny long ball cut through the Leek Wootton defence and their forward nipped in to score. However Leek Wootton roared back and forced a number of corners and from one of them they equalised. Frankie put in a delightful cross that invited some attention and Jacob duly obliged, his header hitting the back of the net with some force for his first ever league goal. More chances came at both ends but the half-time score of one each was a fair reflection of the match to that point.
After the interval it was Leek Wootton that had the majority of the attacks as they started to take control of the midfield. Dan was causing plenty of mischief in the home defence but the Colts couldn’t quite get the killer touch. At the other end Fenny were also creating chances but Jack was saving everything that came his way. Despite the wave of attacks it was looking like being a two goal match but then with three minutes left a rising ball hit Jacob on the shoulder and the referee very harshly awarded a spot kick to the home side. Jack saved it but the oncoming forwards managed to hit home the rebound and the lads’ rotten luck this season looked like continuing for another week. However the Colts showed some great fighting spirit and immediately went on the attack forcing another couple of corners and as the match moved into injury the Colts attacked again and Dan picked the ball up on the corner of the box and curled in a beautifully crafted shot to find the back of the net and secure the draw.
The point was no more than the lads deserved, after an even first half they upped their game in the second and had the majority of the play with man of the match Frankie and Jakob pulling the strings in midfield and feeding the ever improving Dan up front. The lads have had their fair share of bad luck this season but hopefully now having registered their first point they will turn the corner and start to grow their points tally.

Fenny Compton next up for Leek Wootton
Friday 9th October, 2009
It’s back to league action this weekend for the lads as they travel to Fenny Compton in their quest to open their Division 1 account. The Colts have yet to register a positive result in the league although there have been signs of improvement of late. Last time out they at least avoided a defeat in normal play before going out of the cup on the lottery of the penalty shoot out and before that a strong performance at Wellesbourne that should have merited some reward. In contrast Fenny Compton have had some success this season, a 6-0 defeat of Woodford United and last week a penalty shoot out victory for themselves at Balsall & Berkswell following a 2-2 score; a great result considering they only had ten players. Their other matches this season have resulted in defeats, to league leaders Hillmorton and Tazmanian Cruisers.
The Colts have only played Fenny Compton on three occasions in the past. Last season they met in the Supplementary Cup and led for a long period before a harsh penalty decision in the last ten minutes turned the game Fenny’s way and two further late goals gave them a 3-1 victory. The other matches were at Under 10’s age group when Frankie scored the only goal of the game with the last kick of the match but Fenny reversed the result in the away fixture in another close match winning that one 3-2.

Leek Wootton rue the missed chances
Monday 5th October, 2009
In form Division 2 side Cubbington Albion came to Leek Wootton on Sunday and took away the ticket to the next round of the cup with a penalty victory in a very tight and entertaining game that could have gone either way.
Playing with the slope in the first half the Colts had a mass of chances but failed to take any of them. Dan, Frankie and Callum all came close but alas the killer breakthrough didn’t materialise. A string of dangerous corners were delivered but many sailed through the area or were cleared and somehow the visitor’s goal stayed in tact in the opening half. At the other end Jack had little to do such was the first half dominance.
After the break and playing with the slope Cubbington immediately went on the attack and pushed the Colts on the back foot and they took the lead with a long ball that should have been dealt with but an error let in the visiting forward and they were one up. To their credit the Colts came back well and pushed hard up the slope having a series of chances. The push and go football was good from the Colts but for long periods they didn’t have the finishing technique in front of goal to back up their good approach play. In an entertaining second half chances came at both ends but halfway through the half it was the Colts who managed to find the back of the net when Dan broke free and smashed the ball home for the equaliser. The game was still anyone’s and with eight minutes left the visitors looked as though they may have taken it with a good goal down the Colt’s left. However the Colts continued to press and got a break three minutes from time when a loose hand in the box resulted in Frankie putting away the penalty.
At 2-2 the game went into extra time but still the teams couldn’t be separated and so it was the dreaded penalties. The Colts took an early lead when Frankie smashed home the first spot kick but a series of misses meant that it was Cubbington who booked their place in the next round. Good luck to them but unfortunately the Colts abysmal cup record continues with just one cup victory in their history – as the saying goes, let’s concentrate on the league lads!

Cup football returns to Leek Wootton
Friday 2nd October, 2009
This Sunday sees the return to cup football as the Colts play host to Division 2 pacesetters Cubbington Albion. Formally known as Lillington Rangers the Colts have a perfect record against the Leamington based club with five wins out of five however this season the two teams have had very differing starts to the campaign and the visitors come to Leek Wootton full of confidence and looking to spring an upset. This season Cubbington have been banging in the goals all 19 of them in just three games with only 2 conceded, somewhat different to the Colts 1 scored and 12 conceded. However the Colts are seeing signs of improvement and will be hoping that home advantage swings the tie in their direction.
Neither team has a great cup pedigree with the 7-2 victory for the Colts at under 10 age group (helped with a hat trick from Blake), being the only cup victory to date for the Colts in their entire history! Lets hope the lads improve on this.
Kick off is at 3:00 p.m. at Leek Wootton recreation field with extra time and penalties available should the teams fail to be separated.

When you’re down the luck doesn’t go your way…
Monday 28th September, 2009
The Colts left championship favourites Wellesbourne disappointed on Sunday as they were denied what could have been a precious and well earned point by a poor decision by the official. On the stroke of half time Dan was brought down in the box and Frankie stepped up to score from the spot but the referee cancelled the goal and awarded a free kick to Wellesbourne for infringement in the arc by one of the Colts players. Extremely harsh in junior football and as it happens incorrect, if there was encroachment (and it was marginal) then the kick should have been retaken. This was tough luck on the Colts who played their best game of the season and more than matched the hosts in most parts of the field.
Wellesbourne started the brightest and had a number of half chances without really troubling the Colts goal but midway through the half a long ball was not cleared and the home forward ran in to lob the keeper and score. The Colts came back well however and were rewarded for their efforts with the spot kick but alas that was the closest they came.
After the interval the Colts probably had the better of the chances but couldn’t find that equalising goal with Dan going the closest a couple of times and as the whistle went the lads left the field disappointed but if they play with this level of organisation and commitment every week they will hopefully register their first division 1 points soon.

Toughest test yet for Leek Wootton
Friday 25th September, 2009
Two games, two defeats yet there’s always the next game however when the next game is arguably the toughest game of the season things don’t get any easier in Division 1. This weekend the Colts travel to high flying Wellesbourne for only their second ever meeting. Although the Colts have played their reserve team many times there has only been one cup match at under 10’s which has paired the two teams together. On that occasion Wellesbourne won 2-0 and went on to lift the cup, something they then continued to do over the next two seasons as well. In the league they haven’t won the title as yet but they have always been there or thereabouts and were runners-up last season. This year they have won both games, an opening 1-0 victory over Central Ajax and then last week a 3-0 win over Balsall & Berkswell; two wins and yet to concede a goal!
So a daunting task for the lads but they go into the game in optimistic fashion as ever. A good training session on Thursday helped with the preparation and this week goal keeper Jack returns which will give the team a welcome boost. A tough match this Sunday but the lads always raise their game when the challenge is there so fingers crossed you never know.

October fixtures released
Friday 25th September, 2009
The Colts have been drawn at home to Cubbington in the Cup and will play on Sunday 5th October. Cubbington like ourselves changed names over the summer and are the old Lillington Rangers who the Colts have always beaten when we have met. Indeed our poor cup record is only brightened by the one time we met them in the cup when we won 7-2 at the under 10 age group; other than that it’s been first round exit every year for the Colts. The following week we are at home to Fenney Compton and then on the 19th we visit Southam United before a two week break for half term.

Colts wilt in the heat
Monday 21st September, 2009
The Colts slumped to their second defeat of the season against free scoring Hillmorton Juniors ending up losing 6-0 despite being in the game for a long period. The visitors opened the scoring just before half time and for fifteen minutes of the second half that was all that separated the teams in a tight match but then two quick goals and the heat evaporated any lasting battling spirit from the Colts and despite a spirited last ten minutes when the Colts pushed hard for a consolation goal the result was long gone. With numbers down this week including being without our regular keeper didn’t help and we hope to have a full squad for the trip to high flying Wellesbourne next week.

After just 1 week the web site proves a worldwide hit
Wednesday 16th September, 2009
The new Leek Wootton web site is just over a week old but already it has had over 2,000 page views and has been viewed from as far away as India in the east and Brazil in the west with visitors from 8 different countries already logged on. In the UK alone there have been over 300 separate visitors – if only we had that many coming up to support the lads each week!
We hope you are all enjoying the new site and please keep visiting us.

Hornets give Colts a lesson in finishing
Sunday 13th September, 2009
The Colts made the short trip to Balsall Common on Sunday to open their account in Division 1 and were shown a clear pair of heels in front of goal as they went down 5-1; however the performance was somewhat better than the score line suggests something that the Hornets manager said after the match.
The Colts started brightly with some good approach play but offered little up front whereas the home side looked far more dangerous with their nippy forwards always forcing the Colts defenders to be on their guard. Yet the Colts defence seemed to be coping well until they made a hash of a back pass move and the Hornets took the lead. As the half came to a close a second goal came as the Colts midfield failed to back track to leave a Hornets forward unmarked at the back post to score with ease. A two goal deficit was perhaps a little unjust for the Colts but the home side took full advantage of the errors.
A formation change brought the Colts more into the game up front and they took the game to the home side for the opening period of the half but another defensive error let in the Balsall forward for a third goal before the Colts managed to find the net themselves when Callum wiggled free of his marker and slotted it past the keeper but any hope of a comeback was quickly dashed by yet another backline error and Balsall added another near the death to give the Colts a harsh welcome to division 1.
Callum took the man of the match award and there were also good performances from Connor, Jacob, Frankie & Jakob and the Colts played some good passing play and probably played the better football in the midfield but too many defensive errors on the day cost them dear.

Club launched with a third pre-season victory
Friday 11th September, 2009
The new club was officially launched on Thursday evening when the new kit was issued to the lads together with a fun social evening in the club house and a match with Norton Lindsey sandwiched in-between.
The new kit went down well with the lads and once again a big thanks to Broad Lane Leisure for their great support and after the official season photo it was back to action as the Colts quickly went on the attack but the Norton defence held firm until midway through the half when Frankie shot from the edge of the box to score his fourth pre-season goal. The visitors tried to attack with a few balls behind the back four but once again the new central partnership of Dan & Jacob kept them at bay with Jack mopping up anything that drifted too far. With the half coming to a close new signing Jakob scored his first ever goal for the Colts with a quality strike from 20 yards out. He skilfully controlled the ball and maintained his control on the ball as it whistled past the keeper.
A two goal interval lead was a fair reflection of the half and with the slope in the visitors favour the defence was expecting to step up their game in the second half. However the Colts maintained the offensive and spent the majority of the half in their opponent’s half but could not add to their first half tally with two efforts from an ever improving Kris, one a shot from the angle and the other a powerful header being the closest they came. Jacob was awarded the man of the match award for an imposing game at the heart of the defence that snuffed out everything that Norton could throw at him but there were good performances throughout the team as they maintained their good passing game.
Three wins on the trot in their warm-up games hopefully sets up the Colts for their toughest challenge yet when they open their Division 1 account at Balsall & Berkswell on Sunday.
